02 GC Overland gas mileage
Does anyone know of any tricks on how to get better gas mileage out of my GC? I hate to get rid of it because of the low milage and it has less that 65k miles on it. I know all about driving the posted speed, keeping it tuned, etc but maybe there is some adjustment or add-on that an experienced mechanic might know about to boost efficency. It has the 4.7 H,O, V8 & is AWD all the time.

I feel you on this, but take a second and do the math and it might help you feel a little better. I had a Honda Accord that averaged 25 in my mixed driving conditions that I currently get 17 in with the WJ. I started feeling regret until I did the math and found that at my average of 700 miles per month, that's only about $50 per month if gas rises to $4. I can live with that.

I laugh at the people that have a paid for vehicle that gets less than 20mpg, then freak over gas prices and BUY a new tuna can for 300 bucks a month plus gas and extra insurance, just to "save" maybe 75 bucks a month in gas money.

If the vehilce is paid for, no matter what the mileage, it's cheaper than buying a new econobox.

The newer the models of Jeeps get, the worse mpg I'm recognizing. I have a 94 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 3" suspension lift and 30s on it; I get about 23 mpg.

I wouldn't upgrade anything until it is due to be replaced, the extra investment might be worth it then. Driver behavior and tire inflation are the #1 factors.
There is no magic bullet EXCEPT maybe "brown gas".
Google Stanley Meyer but if black SUV's and helicopters show up at your house you didn't hear it from me.

I bought this vehicle knowing what the gas mileage was so I have no regrets. It doesn't hurt to ask a question like mine knowing that technology changes and there are tricks to this trade that some serious mechanics know about. I've have large SUVs for over 20 years and will probably continue buying them. Actually I have 2 Cherokees but never one with 4WD all the time which is part of the low mileage problem.
I did the math and saving $75 a month to get a $400 monthly car payment is crazy. But on the other hand when the savings begins equaling the car payment another look should be taken. Not knowing how high gas prices will go --well, the math may be important.
4Doors - you have it correct!!! Some people don't do the math & think they did something great but only ended with a car payment they didn't have to begin with BUT they boast about getting 30-40 mph, LOL.
The 'light' foot requirement might just be a problem--ha,ha.
Thanks for everyone's comments.

I have an 03 limited, with every option known, including the quadra drive and 4.7HO.
The difference between our rigs would be yours is 1" taller and has the "rock rails".
I run 33 psi in the tires (factory spec) run 91octane (factory spec) mobil 1 oil and a k'n'n drop in panel filter.
Around town I average mid to high 18mpgs and can coax into the 19's out of it, out on the open road handy to 23mpg at 75-80mph.
Now, around town I can easily get 11-12mpg if I feel like it.
What are you getting for milage?

I haven't check the mileage the old fashion way lately but the onboard display is saying 15-17 local & 21-22 highway. Is the onboard computer accurate in determining gas mileage??
My other half uses this vehicle 90% of the time locally & I know she has a heavy foot on takeoffs. On the highway I'm usually in the 60-70 mph range with sudden burts to 90, LOL. I know on one 500 mile trip last summer when I maintained a sensible speed I got up to 24 mph but this is very, very rare.

Lots of folks say the overhead is inaccurate... mine is within a decimal point or two... I run factory size 17" tires... Michelin Cross Terrains, certainly not an aggressive tire.
I've never seen 24mpg, and if I'm in the mountains driving 70ish, with some 2 lane passing involved, then high 21's low 22's is typical... the 23mpg happens on flat interstate with no winds.
Funny, the Limited is my wifes vehicle too... and she knocks down 15-17 in town... when it's 17, it's like... 17 point 1. ha.
Sounds like we get about the same.
Everything is in good tune, so, if you figure out a way to increase, please, post it.
