So jelly! I want to work on my Jeep too!
Nice work! So you're using the stock front driveshaft on the rear @4.5" of lift?
Stock front DS on the rear @5.5" of lift. Plenty of room on the slip.

Got the sliders burned in today.

Touched up the undercoating underneath, and moved to the front. Installed Teraflex SS extended brake lines, flushed and bled the front brakes.

Then I adjusted the control arms...had to run to HF and pick up a 1/4 ton chain hoist/come along to get the axle back in line. Got the caster set at around 8*. Moved on to my steering clearance issue. Did some grinding on the offending bracket, and it did improve, but I'm still not getting full lock on either side...so, I'm going to run with it. It isn't bad, just the steering stops are not hitting. Going to get it put back together and see how it does. If all is good, I'll adjust the steering stops. Right now, as it sits, I get almost 2 full turns of the steering wheel in both directions...when turning right, it hits the OTK bracket...which I did grind down some. On the other side, it hits the coil. Both steering stops are set for the stock config, and they now have about the same distance between the two sides, lock to lock.

So...tomorrow, I will torque all the CA bolts, tighten the jamb nuts on the CA's minus loctite, touch up the paint on the bracket I ground down, then install my front shocks, put the tires on, set my toe in, then attach the drag link and adjust as best I can...torque any remaining hardware, and call the front good until I can test drive.

After all that, I'll re-install the front bumper, hook up the battery and winch, top off diff fluids...then fire her up for the first time in more than seven months! First place is the gas station, only a few blocks away, to top off the empty tank. That should be a good indicator as to what I need to adjust.

One last thing. My niece's car took a crap on her. Hyundai Tiburon. CV shaft, maybe. They never took it to a shop. She's in nursing school ATM, and was trying to squeeze out as much as she could out of her car...but it does have almost 300k on it, so they decided to get her a new ride. They went to go pick it up today...a VW Jetta, 09...I didn't say a word...but, I asked if they were trading in the car...they said no. They're going to sell it to a scrap yard.

This is good news. I'm taking the seats, LOL...Told them as much and they said "go for it"...so, the rig will have some better seats in the immediate future!

Awesome! Man, you've made good time!

Also I never really noticed just how small the XJ front brakes are. Maybe it's this photo but the rotors look really really small around that hub.

That's badass right there. I wish I could afford a bender and a better welder. I'd certainly build the sliders... don't know about being good enough to get a job as one though. Don't you have to know about what gas to use for what metal and whatnot? Ya know, all the technical side about it...

Well, that's when I started taking classes...when I wanted to learn more. There's also lots of forums, videos, and all that...it's like anything else, if you have a passion for it, you'll find ways to learn more about it.

Most of the time I use 7018 rod for arc, and 75/25 mix for MIG at work...so gas/materials depend on what you're doing. I work with a guy who's been a welder for over 30 years, and learn new things from him all the time. I still need to take classes for MIG...completely self-taught there. I've taken classes for arc and oxy/acetylene, and it was a huge help. All classes were at the local CC. So, fairly inexpensive.

As far as the tools themselves, yeah, it's a tall pole...but I started by putting my money for jeep parts towards tooling instead, knowing that it was an investment. It has payed off, but takes time. Still need a decent notcher. It's just a matter of time. Once I'm finished with my build I plan on saving some coin to expand my tool collection, LOL

You know I started looking for basic welding classes with no luck at local colleges and no one does it unless your going for a degree and I've looked outside of there and it's all technical schools charging 30-40k just to learn welding...
I just want it to fab things here and there for my jeep. And maybe stuff around the house(gates)...

Pick up decent machine and gear, and internet away...lol

The best teacher in welding is time under the hood.
