depends on where u get it really i would try to get one from a u-pull jy that way u can just undone the control arms, brake lines, and undone the steering from the pitman arm that way u know everything is there i would go for a 97-99 front axle= there high pinion,760x u joints, useually lower miles as far the rest of the stuff i would try to grab together a trans and t-case together that way you will know the input spline count is the same that will save some time other than that the t-case linkage is about all you need idk about the 5speed mines a auto but i grabed all the wires the was with the trans so i didn't have to lengthen the speedo wire for yours being i 97 im pretty sure you have to use a 97-01 trans if it is a auto i know the plugs on a 91-96 are different

Right in the same boat with you man.... may I suggest the powertrax lock-right.... under 400 bucks and you don't have to mess with your ring gear... just pop off the diff cover, remove your axle shafts, take out the spiders and throw the internals into the carrier... this is exactly what I plan on doing when I get the money... 4 wheel drive or not
its not that bad finding the parts is harder than the work if u dont have a complete donor jeep with you to pick parts from which is what i would have done but i live in the city
and we can't have junk cars around so i had to go and just get the stuff i needed other than that its not been bad i think if u can do a lift u could swap one over besides for i got in mine as sits there no way i could have bought a 4x4 like it

You wanna watch out for the front axles in the 80's model cherokee's... most (if not all) of them came with the vacuum-actuated Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) which is prone to failure - there are a lot of fixes for this, some simple and cheap, others not so much.... other than that issue, just make sure everything is copacetic with the drivetrain and you should be fine. The NP231 was a pretty standard transfer case used on the cherokees throughout all the years of production... with the NP242 and 249's as near-direct replacements...
Be sure that if you're going to re-use your original 2wd transmission that you get the output shaft from the donor vehicle and make sure that the spline counts are the same... if they're not, you're going to have to use the tranny from the donor.
If the rear axles are the same, you can use the rear driveshaft off of the donor vehicle, if not, you're going to have to use a different axle (i.e. your jeep has a D35 and the donor has a 8.25 - DS lengths will be different).
