yeah I don't recommend converting your 2wd tranny to 4wd. You basically have to tear the whole tranny apart just to change out that output shaft.

Thanks for posting this thread, peppers. I searched for "2wd to 4wd" because I'm looking to do the same thing on my '00 XJ I recently bought (eventually) and this is exactly what I was looking for. And as coincidence would have it, you're a Lawrencevillain, too! Haha. Small world

Just spray brake clean on it and rub it. You could probably soak a rag in brake fluid and lay it on the wheel for a few minutes and it will peel off by its self.

For me it wouldn't be a big deal. I actually have a buddy who's got an old 89 XJ with an AW4 and NP231 sitting in his parent's back yard, doesn't start, but they haven't used it in years so eventually I'm going to talk him into letting me just tow it away and I'll strip the front axle and trans/xfer case out of it and junk/part out the rest.

I'd probably have to wait awhile to do the conversion though. Truth be told I don't plan on doing much crawling, mainly use it in what folks around here would call an "expedition" style, so I'm going to do a lift and tires first, maybe a locker.
