1968 Jeepster Commando/CJ Hybrid
Hey guys got a new build for you all. I know, I know its not an XJ but I think a lot of you will find it interesting. My dad recently purchased a 1968 Jeepster commando to build as a street-able wheeler project. The basic end goal for this build is to be able look at something and know you can get over it without breaking or getting stuck. I'll give you a list of the specs for right now and then ill give you a list of the plans for the future.
Current Specs:
-1968 Jeepster Commando
-CJ7 Front hood, fenders, and grill
-Chevy small block 350 (freshly rebuilt)
-Turbo 400 auto tranny (freshly rebuilt)
-Dana 20 t-case
-Dana 44 front axle
-Corporate 14 rear axle
-Leaf sprung with longer shackles and soa lift (for now)
-Crappy stock-ish wheels and tires
-Sparco Harnesses (Not properly done)
-Lots of rust
-Multi colored!
Future Plans:
-35"-40" tires
-4 link front and rear
-dual rate remote reservoir coil overs (Hopefully Fox or King)
-4 speed tranny
-twin sticked np205 t-case
-front and rear lockers
-full custom roll cage
-full armor custom fabbed
-hard top and bikini top
-rear swing away tire/fuel/jack carrier
-bright lights
-racing seats and harnesses done right
-OBA
-warn winch
-cab heater
-desert tan or bed liner paint
That's about all I can think of for big things right now but here are some pictures to get us started:
It doesn't look to pretty right now but just you wait!

So a little update, we got it off the trailer and in our shop. The brakes were all seized up so I actually pushed it in with the front of my xj LOL! We also picked up some new tires! Well they are almost new, they are 38.5/15/15 Gumbo Monster Mudders and they have been stored on a tire rack for 90% of their life. We grabbed 5 of them, 4 mounted on wheels and balanced, in like new condition for $800!!!! Talk about a steal!!! They are huge! and they made the jeep look 10 times better all ready! Oh and I also just noticed the jeep has a heavy duty over knuckle steering kit installed. I'm not sure what brand but its really beefy! Anyways, here's some pics of the new tires:

No pictures this time, just a small update. Pulled the front and rear diff covers to check the condition of the axles and confirm the gear ratio (4:10) and we found that the front is welded, but the rear end is untouched. That means we will probably just replace the 4:10s in the front for now so we can drive it this winter. Driving with a welded or lunch box locker front around here in the winter is like driving a crotch rocket on ice haha. Also found that the 15" wheels barely drag on the calipers so we're gunna have to grind the calipers down a few hairs. We are kinda off to a slow start because mom says dad cant start this project until he sells another project lol. This time it looks like its gunna be his 68 chevelle but he says hes got a guy coming out to pick it up Sunday afternoon so maybe then I can run out there and finally get started! Next time hopefully I have a better update for you so stay tuned!

Man I love the 69 Commandos. I had one with the original 225 ODD Fire. 3 speed. NEVER SHOULD HAVE SOLD IT!!!! It is so rare to find on not rusted all out. They have 2 Rust Piles they are calling Commando's Near me. for $700. Who ever buys them has to just need a tittle. Because there is nothing to work with. That is going to be a Killer Rig!!! Great find, and cool build!!

Cool is Right. These a frigging awesome Rigs. There are a couple around the VA Beach Area. I almost wreck every time I see one. These guys have turned them onto one of a kind 4x4 show piece monsters.
Kinda like what yours is starting to look like....
