The lost perilous Beale Wagon Road Through Union Pass Az. Note how all the soft earth washed away from around where the Wagon wheels compacted the dirt in two tracks. It's especially noticeable on the right side of this track.
I know you were asking RocketMouse but I saw where you are from and it made me think of a quote from one of my favorite movies... "Cowboys? I had a run-in with a couple of them up in Prescott."[/QUOTE
So many movies filmed here.....I worked in special effects on one movie. Dropping a stuntman and a star off a cliff in a CJ7.
Last time I lived in AZ I had a house just a little ways south of Phoenix. That was nice... the ex was not. lol.
This time I'll be much further to the north.... in Flagstaff. I leave from far northern CO (25 mins south of WY border) for Flag in less than a week.
Lol, you would be surprised how reliable these really are. We put many long distance and hard off road miles on ours with a cracked head for a year and a half before it finally got bad enough I needed to work on it.
That's what I'm hoping for. I think the ole girl will do just fine if I take it easy..... I've done a lot of work on her in the last couple months. Damn near 3/4 of a page single spaced to be honest.
Really wish I could punch the PO in the face... just once for the neglect or stupidity, or both depending on which-ever it is. lol. I mean what a complete #&*!@#@ing moron to do that to a very low mileage 99% rust free XJ. He should be ashamed of himself. And publicly shamed for doing it. IMHO lol.
I think I'm just feeling a little unsure with it right now just because this will be the first serious road trip for hours at a time on interstate hwys. And I haven't run her like that yet is all.
Once this trip is safely under my belt with her and no major issues, I'll feel a lot better about the overall condition.... what it's capable of, etc. especially for hitting trails once I get there.

I am crossing my fingers man. All will be well on your trip... I am absolutely elated you decided to come to the great state of Arizona!
Oh... And "The Cowboys?" Probably locals throwing their weight around. They tend to do that here when protecting their rural "hood" from city folks. lol

Thanks... can use all of that I can get. .... No worries about the "cowboys" part.... I may be high tech for my career, but truth be told, I grew up out on farms/ranches, and open fields for crops on a dirt road, and had to drive to get to the nearest town. So I'm the real deal when it comes to ridin' ropin' and such for that lifestyle... definitely not a city slicker here. lol I deal with the "concrete jungle" because I have to and do it well... but truth be told, I prefer out in the open away from all of that rat-race.
I like AZ... don't get me wrong.... after a divorce many years ago, I swore to myself that I'd never live in AZ again. But who knows what will happen this time.. lol.

Hey... The Wife... Don't blame that on Az! That could have happened anywhere! lol
I married a Native American gal, tell you what... I am very certain that I could have never done better.
You are going to think I'm crazy, but have you had anything strange happen when you were up there? Lol
Strange, yes, but mostly coincidental. The funniest was when I was still married and before we bought an RV the wife and I were tent camping for 5 days up there. Just the two of us and our dogs. We got a pretty good rain storm in the middle of the day but I had strung tarps from the trees so we had areas to shelter from the rain. It rained decently hard for maybe 30 minutes and then completely stopped. I looked up at the sky and yelled "Hey Mother Nature, is that ALL YOU GOT?" Right after I said that it started POURING! The hardest rain I have ever seen up there and it lasted for HOURS. I spent the next several hours digging trenches to keep water from flooding the tent. All in good fun though. But my now-ex-wife never let me tease Mother Nature again. LOL

The other one I remember well was we had been trail riding for about two hours and were almost to our destination when we came upon a cattle guard. And on the cattle guard with one hoof stuck IN IT was a huge bull. He had been just standing there but when he saw us he got nervous. We got out and looked at him for a minute thinking of a plan. Keep in mind this is the ONLY way to our destination or we have to turn around and go back two hours the wrong way. We couldn't really think of a way to get him unstuck so me and a buddy decided to slowly walk over for a closer look. As we did that he started to buck like a rodeo bull and when he did... he got his hoof unstuck. But then... he was mad at me, being the person nearest him. He literally did the thing they show bulls doing on cartoons, where he does a burnout with his front legs in a pose that says he is about to charge. I unholstered my FNX-45 and pointed it right at his head. Not really sure it would have stopped him if I had to shoot but it might have disoriented him. Luckily, like a scene from Crocodile Dundee, he slowly calmed down and then just turned and walked away. I was glad I didn't die first, and glad I didn't have to shoot him second.

But she is not from Az... She is from Illinois.
Don't get me wrong my friend.... it's not that I blamed AZ on that... it was just with the absolute witch (with a B) she turned into, and me being a gentleman and a Christian.... didn't mix well anymore. And I truly felt that the state wasn't big enough for both of us...as I never wanted to ever, and I mean ever run into her again..and she was from AZ... so I sold the house and left.
I personally liked AZ. I've lived all over the world...so I've been around. and really liked it there.

My place on the mountain is like that. If you see one little cloud start to build up you have only about 30 minutes to get out or you are going to be stuck there for a week trying to fix the roads enough to get out. lol

I love Bull stories. Grew up on a ranch and have quite a few of my own. Cows with Calves can be much worse! Lol
Here are my Arizona pics of the day. After work I saw a bit of a pink sky so I headed to my favorite overlook high up on the Goldfield Mountains by my place. I got there a few minutes late for the super pink clouds but still got a couple of decent pics. One sunset and the other overlooking the Superstition Mountains. Bugout... this one should be easy for you to find on Google Earth.
And for reference. Standing on that same overlook I took this pic of Apache Junction where I live. This is looking south and the red arrow is about where I live.

I had no idea Mc Dowel reached all the way out to there! lol I think I would have found it without it but are those ballfields? They took me right to it. There is a communications facility right behind you there.
Not sure I have ever seen pink like that without some clouds to bounce off of.
