Default XJ disc brake swap: question

After doing some researching on the net, am I wrong to conclude the KJ(Liberty) swap is only for XJ's with the Chrysler 8.5 diff and the ZJ(GC) swap is for the D35c diff? I was under the impression the KJ swap was universal. Was I wrong? My XJ has the D35c rear end so I want to be sure before I invest any money in the parts. Thanks.

Also note that the earlier non-clip D35 has a different bolt pattern than the later c-clip D35. I think the non-clip D35 shared the same bolt pattern as the D44? I know it's the same as early 90's Crown Vics, as I have 92 Crown Vic discs on the rear of my 89 MJ. It was almost straight bolt-on, just needing to fab a small spacer to hold the bearing in and some brake line work. I think the early ZJ D35 discs are a straight swap over to the XJ c-clip D35.

I was under the impression the ZJ swap caliper and rotor needed to be from a 96-98 GC. The earlier parts would not work. Am I mistaken? My XJ is a 96 Country 4x4 and the build sheet says I have a D35c diff. I previously asked if the "c" indicated it was a c clip diff. It was told yes.

The C does not stand for c-clip, it stands for custom. This means that it was shipped to Chrysler incomplete from Dana and then Chrysler finished the build. I'm digging way back in the memory, but I believe the pre 91 D35 non-clip, D44, and Ford 8.8 (thr crown vic donor I used) all shared the same "big" backing plate bolt pattern. I don't know what pattern the later D35 or 8.25 had, or if they were the same. Backing plate pattern is only part of the equation though, as the backing plate or retainer could be thicker or thinner requiring some customization of the bearing retainer/spacer.

This article might help.

94 to 98 ZJ.
Or Liberty

Both fit on Dana 35s.

Ok, so which set will work with the least amount of modification? KJ or ZJ?

KJ. ZJ requires a minimal amount of material to be removed from the hole in the caliper bracket. Like next to nothing.

Are there any particular years for the KJ to use?

I don't know. I've always used ZJ stuff.

Will these also fit on the XJ Chrysler 8.25?

Yes. Either will work. It's just that the caliper bracket hole needs to be opened up a bit with a file or sanding drum if you use the ones from a Dana 35.

Pretty sure any KJ will have the 8.25. I got my parts off of a 2004
