What would you guys estimate the cost of a hack-n-tap SYE on a 242 to be if done at a shop?

Default Rope Rear Main Seal

Hello All -

I'm looking for a bit of advise/direction regarding the infamous rear main seal on my 88 Wagoneer Limited. I took it to my mechanic to have a good look at it, and he informed me that the rear main seal is leaking very badly. He also said that in order to fix it, he would need to drop the transmission because it's a rope seal.

The problem I am running into is, after doing some research on my vehicle, all I am seeing are the regular main seals, like here: http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoRearMain.htm, that aren't rope seals.

What is the deal with this? Do I really need to take my transmission out because this is a certain type of seal or is it done in the same fashion as referenced above without having to drop the transmission? Any and all responses or advise is welcomed. Thanks.

Why don't you buy a new seal and see what it looks like?

I'm sorry to inform you that your mechanic is an uninformed soul.

So, let's figure this out without him. It's easy. Here's how. Click on the link below. And by the way, you may find out the "infamous" rear main seal is not all that common but is mostly misdiagnosed. there's hope for a super easy fix!! Keep us informed of your findings.

1998 GC 4.0 w/auto

Behind and above the front bumper is a plastic 'air dam' looking thing.

But it's lowest part is higher than the bottom of the bumper so it's not directing or deflecting air flow.

It's held up in place with four push-in plastic buttons.

I removed it to get easier access to replace the front sway bar bushings and links. Then I forgot to replace it.

Why is it there?
What does it do?
What will happen if I leave it off?

Default 94 jeep laredo cherokee shaking??

I'm new here so forgive me if I'm doing this wrong. I recently bought a 94 jeep cherokee laredo runs and drives fine but few things wrong with it.. as the jeep sits in park it doesn't shake bad at all but as soon as I put it in drive it's really shakey as I accelerate it stops but as soon as I take my foot off the gas it shakes. In neutral it also doesn't shake as bad. Few days ago I looked it up on Google and this website came across, I read a few different things from spark plugs to motor mounts. It has 240 k and it was previously owned by a young teenager who probably didn't keep up with all its maintenance. Any ideas of whats going on with it ?

ALSO TODAY I NOTICED IT MAY BE LEAKING COOLANT (SLOWLY) .

Air dam. It is supposed to aid in aerodynamics. But 'aerodynamics' and 'jeep' do not fit well together.

My guess will be motor and transmission mounts. In neutral there is no 'torque load' on driveline. In Drive the torque will want to rotate/shift the engine. If mounts are bad than this rotation will be excessive and cause interference of parts, most often the exhaust where it passes over crossmember/transmission mount.
Leaking coolant? It some missing or do you smell coolant in the cab with the heat on, or smell it around engine bay after shutdown?

Just to cut and drill the output shaft? Or fully install with driveshaft and corrected pinion angle?

lols, I'm just being a dink. Although he'll find a lot more information a lot quicker by typing 3 words into google than typing a few sentences here. Especially on those topics. Usually best to google a while and then ask a specific question if you need clarification.

Well, that is great news haha! I'm picking it up today from the shop and I didn't have them do anything to it. There are some other seals I believe that are leaking too so, per your advise, I'll replace those first and then get to the rear main seal. So, if I'm understanding you correctly, it's the same process for the RMS on the 88 Wagoneer Ltd?

Deal haha! I am going to replace that (valve cover gasket) and torque the bolts down afterwards, and the oil filter adapter as well. Any other suggestions?
