XJ Ask the Question Thread
3.73s were only on the metric tonne packages right? Check your intermediate shaft. There's a rubber vibration damper that is vulcanized into the collar towards the firewall. Get someone to help you turn the wheel while you watch the shaft. If it's anything like what mine was doing, you'll see the part of the shaft before that collar move more than the rest of it.

No idea on MJ gears. In the early & mid '80s a lot of weird gear ratios were available. The time period with 3.73:1 towing package Dana 44s is also home to 4.56:1 2.5L automatics and strange "fuel economy" gears. 3.3something, I think.
Way too many stocking items.

not all Dana 44 had 3.73 though. I have seen quite few of them that had 3.55 gears

Chrysler corporate sent me a build sheet on a Saturday! Didn't expect that. Looky what I found!
4.0 hardly any rust, with a 242 and an 8.25 rear end! I'd assume no limited slip or it'd say right? It does have an air bag module recall though.

any idea how different the engine wiring harness is from a 99 xj 4.0 ax15 and lets say a 99 tj wrangler 4.0 ax15 wiring harness?
interchangeable? guessing not but hopeful.
just the harness that connects two plugs off ecm to the tps/iac/cps/o2 sensors/ injectors/ and the trans etc.

So I've had this small vibration that sounds like uneven tires, always at around the same speed, only on deceleration. After much diagnosis, I've found out the front output of my transfer case (NP242) has lateral play in it. Basically when I play with the u-joints, it feels tight, and when taking the yoke and trying to move it, the little rubber boot moves around (lateral play, not rotation).
when I drive in 2wd it feels rough like 4x4 is engaged. on top of that, there is no leak from the yoke, but I am positive the play comes from the TC and not u-joints. I've also replaced the dana 30 pinion yoke a couple weeks ago.
so is there a bearing there that is slowly going bad? is it accessible from the outside or this involves rebuilding the transfer case? how long can I drive in 2wd this way? would removing the driveshaft help any since I can't do this job before a while but don't want to make it worse than it is now.
cheers
(on the video you can't really hear it, but basically the green boot is moving about 1mm left/right)
