If your cooling system as a while is original, it would probably benefit greatly from an overhaul. Even the hoses wear out over time
my friend cut off the shaft where the fan clutch bolts on, and removed the E fan, then drove around like that for a while.... Through the summer, the engine didn't even overheat at all. Lol. I was amazed.

As long as he gets enough air flow through the rad, it should be fine. Depending on the area, especially if windy, you might even be fine while stopped. The fans don't do anything about 10-15mph

Traffic lights here are too long to get away with that

Lightbulb XJ overheat..

Hood vents (available after market) or "poorboy" 1" spacer between hinge and hood...good for 10-20 degree engine temp. drop at idle.

I've never seen vents drop the internal coolant temperature of an engine. They help with underhood temps though. I did the spacer mod with 1-1/4" kindorf raised and it didn't change engine temp. In fact all I did was screw with my AC. Now I have regular hood vents and AC blows cold again.

Also...if you change out 'fan clutch"... MAKE SURE to install a mechanical lock-up clutch..not a cheap "fluid hydraulic" type..they are junk..and will overheat your engine right out of the box...look for the mechanical "bi-metalic" 1-2 inch spiral in center of clutch face

LOL!!..I'm in N.Ga. Mtns where it's been a lovely 90+ degrees for the last month or so..I'm getting a 10-20 degree drop after hard pull at idle..also use "Header Wrap"..the combo keeps me running nice and cool while MySpace friends are cooking eggs on their hoods LOL

It can stabilize temperatures for less fluctuation, but if it changes your coolant temp more than 5°F, your cooling system has issues.

Cooking eggs on their hood has nothing to do with coolant temperatures. Hood vents release trapped hot air, which can cause fuel problems from heat soak. Vents don't have any sizable affect on coolant temperatures.

increasing the airflow through the engine compartment, allows for better airflow through the overworked radiator..along with "dumping" the hot environment the engine is operating in which works like a "blanket" of heat..as proven by any race setup all the way to Formula1. cars with their massive "tunnels"..along with header wrap which drops compartment. temps. allowing for (yes as you said) cooler fuel charge temps as a bonus. As the radiator is only efficent in the bottom part of the core (approx. 20-25%)" any and all efforts to drop engine compartment temps. will be rewarded with a cooler running temp. especially if all engine parts are working as they should....another example is sitting. in traffic on a motorcycle...No airflow equals higher engine temps regardless of cooling system efficiencies..

If your Jeep has any problems staying at 210 or less, idling or driving, your cooling system has a problem. Vents may alter coolant temps if you idle for long periods of time, but the temperature shouldn't go below 195° (thermostat temp) or 210° (safe operating temp).

If you're within that zone, you're fine. If you aren't you have a problem with your cooling system.

Besides your argument for hood vents is only relevant if you're idling or crawling. When you're driving, your vehicle is designed to have a low pressure area beneath it, which will suck the air out of the engine bay and assist with 'pull' through the radiator.

Totally agree!!..as I idle and crawl a lot it has always been a important issue for me..Its a hopping, bouncing, and sometimes jumping affair just to get up my driveway (Ga. redclay) fall through winter and of course, if it rains..LOL......Your spot on about temp. range ...I give mine a workout everyday..I'd love to upgrade to that sweet 3 fan aluiminum one but the $1,000.00 price tag holds me back..I've. been thinking about mounting double "Griffins" off some local "roundy round" boys..pretty easy to find used...maybe an electric water pump...

Ah, you aren't in the majority of users. Those circumstances will result in different needs, as you've said. I'm a fan of hood vents, just not for the reason most people think they're useful

Coolant temp, oil pressure, speedometer, fuel gauge voltmeter, tach...in that order. I don't have any extra gauges installed on my Wrangler yet, and in between Cherokees at the moment
