Stock XJ Cherokee Tech. All XJ Non-modified/stock questions go hereXJ (84-01)
All OEM related XJ specific tech. Examples, no start, general maintenance or anything that's stock.
Not safely. The battery temperature sensor is used to control the rate of charging so that the battery doesn't explode (or just have significantly decreased life but that's not very exciting).
Lots of people recommend to me all sorts of crazy things without knowing what they do, too.
Reasons against one with a mostly stock setup are excessive bump steer. The track bar and drag link must be parallel. Non-parallel front end means more wear on the steering box and contribution to death wobble.
If you have a custom track bar and steering setup it's a different story, but stock track bar bracket or even one that is the same height you don't need it.
Drop pitman arm does not increase flex. What is the problem you are attempting to fix?
I thought a drop pitman arm was supposed to help with proper alignment of your drag link to track bar angles. I have one but never installed it due to proper alignment.
I am changing the tie rod end on a 1994 Zj, the one that goes into the pit man arm. What is the correct measurement that it should be turned into. The old one I measured at 11 cm from the adjustment sleeve to the end of the tie rod. With that setting my steering wheel was tilted to the left. I have the gear box centered and would like to center the steering wheel as well. If I leave the tie rod 11 cm out my wheel is again tilted to the left. Can I just turn the tie rod in until it goes in with the steering wheel centered. I plan on having the alinement do tomorrow but want to get it as close as I can.

Yes Doc that's what I said lol

There is no set distance, it depends on a lot of things and every vehicle is different. Tires must be straight and vehicle at normal ride height/weight. Then adjust it until your steering wheel is straight.

No problem. I do have a 4.5" lift with Rusty's heavy duty steering set up. Rough Country track bar.
I have this setup. A 3" lift. Don't look like it in this pic but the front sits slightly lower than the rear. Would love to go a couple inches higher. So... I'm entertaining 3" spacers in front and 2" shackles in rear. To raise it 2" but level it in front. Any thoughts? Can I wheel my rig with spacers effectively? Sorta worried bout them. I don't wheel hard well not to hard. Tehehe. I know I'll have to order adjustable UcA and Lcas as well as a sye and other things. Just wondering yalls thoughts on the spacers and shackles to get up a few inches higher.
Hello! This is my very first question so please bear with me! I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4L/6cyl... * I have some play in my steering column (making turns)
* It is most noticeable when I drive it the first time each day, then it seems to stop, or just become less noticeable though I get a "floating feeling" at higher freeway speeds
* Had recent tire rotation and balance, and alignment
* At what point does this become an urgent repair problem?
I've asked several mechanics, and the answer's I've gotten is the bolts need tightening in the steering column...it's most likely a Saginaw design?, and the entire column needs to be taken apart...
I hope you have some guidance for me....I would also like a good mechanical drawing so I have a reference....
Thanks!! Judy1
He has a 4.0 so I left the AX-5 out. The AX-5 isnt as bad as they say for the 60° V6 or 2.5L 4. Now for the 4.0, if you have a full on rock rig or trail rig only or drive like you think you're in one of the Fast and Furious movies then you can kiss it good bye. I've rebuilt quite a few transmissions from various Jeeps and the main problem I found when I had an AX-5 was people slamming the shifter from gear to gear, dumping the clutch instead of engaging properly, or not fully knowing (although they seriously thought they did) how to drive manual properly.

IDK much about the steering but it just looks like some DOM with TREs, installed in more or less the stock locations. As in, mounts up in the stock angles. RC has a few track bars, the one with the TRE obviously uses the stock location, I don't know anything about the other models.
If you don't have any bumpsteer now it does not appear you have any need for a drop pitman arm. Solution in search of a problem lol
(Though if you have the RC TRE-style unit and want to spend money on your front end, do yourself a favour and buy a real double-sheer track bar)

Brake light in instrument cluster came on this weekend. If I pull up the parking brake light will get brighter and then dim once brake released. Master cylinder full, followed all brake lines and found no leaks. Brake pedal is not soft, pedal holds when running; with key off - pedal gets stiffer with each push. Took it around the corner slammed on the brakes, they don't lock up so ABS is still working. Don't know where to look next.
Yup. Don't do pucks. Get yourself some coils for the lift y u want. Along side the other items on the chart below for you steering as stock steering gets maxed out at 4.5"
As for the rear you can do shackle relocators and boomerang shackles
Does anyone else have Cherokee adoption fantasies?
I'm new to the XJ world. The biggest unexpected side effect is that every time I see an XJ that is owned by a company or government entity, I want to take it home and love it.
I work next to a building that has a fleet of these. So much potential is going to waste. Does this drive everyone crazy or is it just me?
