Clown is mostly right but when you say loose, be more specific. Like you turn the wheel twice to make a normal turn. Has your jeep been modded any

 

I taped off all black rubber areas and windows and sanded everything first. Pretty straight forward, spray. Thanks, I've been working hard on it the past week. Caution... Tape the areas that paper lays over other paper. I got some random spray that I'm not crazy over.... Then again it's a jeep .

 

Mine was pretty much rust free so I was ok. This was a budget deal so in not too serious on the super fine details as far as areas that didn't get painted.

 

No it has a 2" lift with stock tires. By loose I mean " when I'm driving straight, I can turn my steering wheel about 5 inches either way freely without it having any affect on the wheels".

 

Go ahead and change them. They're dirt cheap.

 

That sounds like a worn out steering box to me.

Get a friend to turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the arm below.

The arm below should move in unison with the steering column.

The steering box can be adjusted a little with the screw on top that has a nut holding it. Loosen the nut, turn down the screw a little, then tighten the nut again.

If it's got some play to it, you may want to swap it out for another steering box.

This is dangerous and potentially catastrophic.
That is not a an adjustment for loose steering. Tightening it in the vehicle can lead to the steering gear binding and breaking off teeth, if this happens on the interstate or exiting a ramp, loss of steering.
The Only way to adjust a steering box is to remove it from the vehicle and have the experience to rebuild them!

 

to those who are familiar with the AW4 transmission.

the shaft that goes through the transmission that the NSS and the shifter linkage go onto. on the linkage side the threads sheared off and now the shifter linkage keeps falling off.

is there anyway that shaft can be easily replaced? or what fixes do you recommend.

 

^right now the plan is to try and weld the libkage back on tomorrow night.

Also, buddy is looking at a 2001 WJ. Anything specific I should look at for him?

 

about AW4

4.0L in WJ = reliable but sucks real bad for fuel. While it is the more reliable engine the transmission behind it blows chunks. If I was looking at a Grand pre-WK I'd go for the V8 if it was maintained properly, and aim for one with an NP242 over the NP249. People tend to forget about transmissions. Disc brakes can be had on any axle, don't get excited when you see the D44 cover because it's aluminum. I think you can still get a free trailer hitch from Chrysler lol

 

Yeah i know about the axles. Either 44a or 35. Hes not gonna go wheeling crazy with it so both axles should be okay with him.
