Default noob with a problem

Hello,
I recently purchased a one owner 01 Cherokee sport. I have always wanted one and finally was able to get one! Anyway the thing runs great except my temperature gauge is not accurate. I was trying to remedy the problem and have been un able to solve it.
The first symptoms of a problem was at idle sitting at stop lights, the gauge would rise to about 220 and then the auxiliary fan would kick on and it would stay there. as soon as I started driving again the temp would go back down and sit just under 210. so to try and fix the problem I put in a new thermostat. Now that the thermostat is in my gauge is on the other end of the spectrum, it will rise to about 130 and sit there. So far I have tried putting in a new thermostat sensor and that has done nothing. I have been looking all over the forums for an answer but can not seem to find one. Anyone have and idea or input?

You sure u installed the thermostat correctly? With a correct thermostat?

Did u check the condition of the fan clutch and the belt?

The original problem is the textbook indicator that the mechanical fan's viscous clutch has failed.

As for the thermostat/temp sensor problem that's very interesting.

I'm still waiting to hear what temperature rating the thermostat is.

Thank you for the responses, I will look into the fan clutch. As fas as the temp of the stat its 195. I drove it a little last night and it's actually heating up to about 150. Still goes no higher though. Also pretty positive I installed the stat correctly, remove housing, clean everything up, insert new stat into recessed hole and reinstall housing.
Should I try another thermostat? Again thanks for the help!

I put it in the same direction as the old one came out. Not sure how to describe it but as long as the old one was in correct it should be. the stat i bought didn't have a top or bottom mark. If it was in wrong wouldn't I overheat though??

A little more info from this morning, I tried to run the heat this morning and it wasn't hot. there was a heater core installed right before i bought the jeep. could my system need flushed? i did notice some very small flecs of what appeared to be dried antifreeze in the radiator filler neck and didn't think anything of it till now.

I would use a mopar t stat. From my experience the temp fluctuates less. You need to check the fan first. Did you use the correct mixture of antifreeze/water for your area? Keep the mixture in mind with winter around the corner.

Also look at the heater control valve. If its there throw it in the trash. Plug the vacuum line and use a T fitting to run the heater hoses.

Just installed a new radiator from advanced auto parts into my 1991 4.0

I've been having slow over heating issues on long drives, I replaced the waterpump, thermostat, heater hoses, upper/lower hoses, thermostat housing about 4 months ago with this problem still happening.

I just put the radiator in and I got about 4 miles before it started over heating rapidly, I really hope I'm not an idiot that left one of those safety caps on the new radiator and slid the hose over it

This has made me sick, venting now and then returning to taking it all apart again....

The strange thing is I didn't have any heat coming from the vents? If I left that cap on it should have still had flow to the heater core I would think... unless I got some corrosion or that cap plugged somewhere...

Ok thanks,
I checked the fan and it all seems good. It doesn't lock up or have any wiggle in it. I can spin it around with a little resistance.
I picked up a new stat and will put that in when I get home.
Thanks again for the help

Sounds like a bad radiator. Burp the system and try again

I'm not following this over a couple pages, but replace your mechanical fan clutch if you're overheating below 15mph
