Use the sensors and accessories from the '99 and you'll be fine. You'll need to plug the hole in the back of the head where the '96's temperature sending unit went.
(1996 and prior have an independent sensor driving the temp gauge, 1997 and later use the PCM's ECT sensor)

For the transmission, you'll need to swap the nss, rear speed sensor (located on the transfer case) and cps from the 99 onto the 96. You'll then need to splice the black 7 pin connector to the 96, leaving out the two wires for the forward speed sensor (lower driver side of transmission under the gear selector on the 99). Finally you need the 96 tcu, and connector. You'll need to look for the pinouts of both tcu's and splice the wires accordingly, because the connectors for the tcu's are different.
Or just keep the 99 transmission in there and swap just the motor.

So you will be doing the swap then?

I'll take a day of splicing wires over a day of grunting around on my back. Which is saying something because I'm partly color blind, and they had to make all those damn wires so pretty didn't they.

Preaching to the choir buddy. Personally, I think it would be easier to swap the motor and tranny as a unit and deal with the sensors than it would be to remove the tranny from the motor and all that.

VC gasket is good, recently replaced with a FelPro.
Oil Pressure sending unit is good, recently replaced.
Engine compartment recently degreased/cleaned
Distributor Cap is covered in oil and the insides of the wire end covers are heavily soaked with oil. No obvious leak in the area, but can visibly see a light coating of oil around the general vicinity.
What's the most likely culprit? What to check next?
