I put a good running 99 wrangler engine in my 90 xj(friends engine he put in a 5.3 chevy) It runs but is backfiring out the exhaust.I've tried to reset the distributor 3 times and I'm getting a little frustrated.I had to use almost everything from the xj on the wrangler engine(longblock) I have alot of mechanical experiance but not on 4.0's I read the manual and can't figure why it won't run smooth..thanks in advance for any help..

X2 on that. I just put a "93" engine in my 2000 cherokee. I had to put my sensors on the older engine. The coputer of you rig is set up to run those sensors so you have to keep that portion of the rig the same unless you plan to get a new computer. My 2 coppers.

The one and only thing you should have swapped is the lower longblock. ALL sensors, as well as the head, exhaust and intake manifold, distributor, and ecu must remain the same for the engine to function. In other words it needs to remain a full renix system. The renix engine has completely different timing patterns than the HO 4.0L engine and parts are not interchangeable.

I even had to use the flex plate from my 2000 engine, because the crank shaft sensor use's the slots in the flex plate to tell the comp where the crank is. The flex plate from the donor engine was quite a bit different.

^^ this is what is happening on the original question asker's XJ. The crank sensor signal isn't indexed correctly for the the engine.

There are so many options for antennas so don't limit yourself to just the 4' fiberglass or 102" whip. Everyone will have different opinion even with the same setup in. the same vehicle.

grinding / whooping noise when accelerating
Hey guys,
Just recently my Jeep has been making a loud grinding / clicking / whooping noise when accelerating. Its only when moving forward and the faster I go the faster the whooping and the higher pitched it gets. I took a look under it to see if I could see what it might be and the transfer case seemed to be barely leaking.
Any help would be appreciated because it is embarrassing to drive around with it like this. Thanks.

Where do you hear it coming from? When you went under your rig did you try feeling of anything was loose.
