I meant to make sure it was leaking there. Not tear it down just to do chain.

If it is leaking, yes replace it. Do cover gasket and front seal. Since you will have it apart anyway.

X2 after I hit a tree I had to replace the timing cover and all that jazz. Do yourself a favor and remove the front clip and the radiator to do it.

My engine has 268k with the original chain and gears, engine ran like new after new chains and gears.

Hi All,

I am new to the Cherokee and to the forum.

I bought a friends '99 XJ A/T and immediately fell in love with it.

I have a problem with it. The car barely moves in L4 and theres a good strain on the transmission to move it say 10mph. I realize that it may need lubrication so need to know if I should just change the lube ( which one to use) and also should I do a flushing? The second part of my question is - I do not know if I have a Chrysler case so want to post the pic and get your response on it.

Please advise if I should change it and look for Chrysler or keep it. I have used the car in the desert in H4 and drives very well. I am mostly using it for Dune bashing.

If by L4 you mean 4wd Lo range, you're not suppose to go above 10mph with that and you should be in 1st gear iirc. That's only for pulling someone outta ditch or a good hill you can't do in 4hi. Plus depending on the TC you have, you shouldnt use 4wd unless you in mud, deep/slippery snow, sand etc. Never dry pavement.

First off, have a complete chassis lubrication done including checking all the gearbox fluid levels and condition.

Yup, I meant it as 4wd Lo range. I use 4hi all the time. The hill climb is not possible with Cherokee in 4 Lo but entirely possible with another Cherokee '00. Seems like I got the wrong end of the stick
