my 96 sport (4.0l Auto 4wd)has a weird prob i hope you can help me with.
It started missing and stalling a few months ago, dieing at lights, wanting to shift into higher gears, and weirdest of all, the speedo and odo are going off the wall, the speedo jumps all over, even in park. it will jumps around from 0 -100 and the odo rols over the miles, while still in park.
I was told it was ECM, so i ordered and replaced it (auto module source), but still no change. Pulling 2 codes, TPS low voltage, and cyl 1 misfire.
Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? And should i send the new ECM back for a return, or just keep it knowing the old one might still go soon?
Thanks for the help.

You're probably safe to return the ECM. I'm a big fan of keeping spare parts, though, so the choice is up to you if the price is right.
Amazingly, a lot of people fail to realize that electronics require wires to work. Automotive wiring is exposed to some of the harshest conditions on the planet and all of it is undersized in the first place. Seems obvious when you think about it. In any vehicle this should always be the first thing to check before replacing components.
Go through this thread here: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/cr...x-tips-153657/ The tips are written toward a slightly older generation but cleaning contacts and ground refreshing are absolutely essential and transfer well over to newer model XJs. 1, 3, 4, 5, 10, and 11 seem like good places to start.

wiring question, i've started an auto to manual swap, i plan on using the engine bay wiring harness from the ax15 jeep, disconnecting at the c100 (i think it's called) and swapping harness's
question is, since the i'll be using the manual computer, manual engine bay harness, NSS will be gone, and the auto's TCM will be unplugged, will i need to do anything for reverse lights or starting? will having the wiring behind dash for the TCM do anything interesting?

Nah you're find. You can splice the switches on the AX-15 into the NSS's harness to get that junk working. Starting in a stick is controlled by a clutch interlock switch, that can go into the NSS as well. I'd have to check my FSM but on my 1999 I believe they're the same wires on both manual and automatic models at least as far as the final connectors.
i read for several hours before i allow a question, you're right, answers are usually out there. but... sometimes i can't find them, especially when i'm not asking the right question to myself.
