Thanks for the pic. I tried pulling my ball joint apart out of curiosity but didn't succeed. Now I know what it looks like...

I got all 4 yoke bolts out no problem. Now I found another issue though... would you guys use this yoke? And if I need a new one, I still need to know the issue about backlash on the ring and pinion...

Yeah mine is leaking, haven't dropped the shaft yet. You think the bearing is gone too?

I would run it, looks ok just where that cap sits.

That's what I was thinking... I'm gonna get a Ubolt kit so I don't have to worry about this problem again... do you know the answer to the backlash issue though? It would be nice to know just for reference...

So last week my alternator went. It would read 12v while driving then drop and check gauges would come on. I put a 136a durango alternator in, and it was fine for a few days. Then yesterday I was wiring in my cb radio. Messin around up above the pedals and what not and when I was done I found that I blew the #2 fuse (by passenger foot area), check engine was on, and gauges were not working. I replaced the fuse and wiggled the wires around the ecu and the gauges worked and cel was off but then volts dropped and check gauges came on again like before I did my alternator. My battery drained, so I charged it, threw it in, and it ran fine, no cel, gauges worked, volts read fine. I'm really confused by this, and was wondering if somebody could shed some light. Also after I did the alternator I feel as if my power steering isn't the same, would the tightness of the belt effect this?

Check your grounds... check your hots.... then check them some more. It sounds like either a bad ground or a short somewhere.

Supposedly the belt being lose can be an issue. But I don't know if this is proven or not.

98 Xj sport 4 door with the aw4, clunk while idling and when taking off. Comes from where the shifter is. Can't hear it outside, clunks faster as you take off and then stops. What do you guys think it is? Can't move forward on my build unless I know what this problem is.

My bad. i deff did not read that outside part. Out of balance driveshaft can wear out the trans mount and cause a clunk sound. Internal transmission problem? Hell idk, im just throwing ideas around. Sry

Flat, S-shaped, and broken. The lowermost, clamped under that hokey supporter thing, is snapped just rear of the axle. Time for some new springs. And be careful because those are pretty rusty - the eyes and bolts will undoubtedly give you a hard time.

Default 89 XJ AT problem

Hey folks, long time no type!

Everything has been just humming along at the XJ house (We have 3 of them) until my Daughter called last week saying her Jeep "wont move anymore" and "it is like is has no transmission"

ok, fluid issue I figure. I ask her to check it and she says it is empty.

Ok, called AAA and had the car towed home (Flatbed)
(FYI - she had already tried to drive it the last two miles with it "slipping bad")

The issue was the stupid plastic clip connector at the lower radiator connection of course.

We just ran the line directly now and refilled the fluid.

It has been several days, and it still will not shift properly. If i rev it up for a bit it will engage and drive ok, but that is obviously not ok.

So, other than dropping the pan and cleaning the filter (which we will do this weekend) is there something else I should be examining or trying?

I really appreciate any help, in advance.

Steve

hate to say it but best guess is that you "should" be looking for a new transmission Clutch packs are probably long gone.

How tolerable would 3.07 gears and 33s be?
