XJ Ask the Question Thread
Hi there, New member and new to Jeeps, just got a Jeep cherokee 2004 CRD 2.8 Diesel Auto trans
1. first issue noticed on day i drove home coolant light kept coming on although its losing coolant my mechanic cannot find a leak anywhere! I am topping it up with a small amount every 2 days or so then light comes on again and goes out after top up.
there is water on the passenger floor but mechanic convinced it is not coolant! so could this be a seperate issue and be the heater core?
2. More serious issue in my mechanics words it is completely gutless is underpowered I am having a job driving up even the slightest incline or hill it or at a junction and pullling off it dosent seem to get above 20mph for quite a way.
He could not find an obvious leak, said it has been tinkered with recently as it had new fuel filter, found the fuel line had been changed but was a transmission hose and not a fuel line hose.
does anyone have any suggestions as to what they think these problems could be caused by?
1. Gut less seriously underpowered when taking off or driving along is it engine or gearbox fault?
2. losing coolant, warning light on, every 2 days topping up by about an inch, wet on carpet passenger front side but mechanic cannot find a leak
3. The replaced fuel line that appears to be wrong hose and is a transmission hose.
Have it booked into Jeep dealership for engine diaognistics fault codes, but they are fully booked for next 3 weeks, dont feel like i should drive it until i know whats wrong, any suggestions much appreciated

Im not an expert but id say replace the fuel line with an actual fuel line? Im assuming it would be a larger diameter tube allowing appropriate fuel to flow.
And you dont need to go to the stealership for code checking. Go to a local autozone/oreillys or whatever is around you. They check em for free.

Well to start off there is no such thing as a 2004 cherokee. Im assuming you mean Grand Cherokee.

I don't know a thing about diesels, but the coolant loss sounds like a 4.0L cracked head. Would that apply to the 2.8L as well?
Edit: He has what we in the States call a KJ Liberty. The name Cherokee was kept overseas.

Diesel motor. I assume he's overseas where there are '02+ XJs.

Question:
Are 2WD and 4WD calipers and pads the same? Parts guy sold me 2WD rotors, and I had to exchange them. Now the calipers and pads don't fit right, and I'm wondering if they're also different.
Also, are there cutoff years for brake hardware, or do all the D30s have the same rotors, calipers, and pads?

You type slow. I even had time to Google it and verify that it's a KJ

Although I'm not sure the different sizes. Check out rockauto.com and see if they have different part numbers. I'm gonna take a quick look but seeing how slow I'm typin lol

Are winch internal parts cheap? My buddy has an XRC 8k winch and if I could but it cheap and fix it I would unless buying a new one would make more sense.
