Yeah its supposed to. I'll look it up when I get home this evening. The switch that gets flipped when you push the rear light in controls whether or not the hatch open button is used.

That's what I'm talking about. I thought it was stupid that the hatch opening up wouldn't turn it on...
I will experiment when I get back home. Hope my switch isn't broke.
If the rear light above the cargo area is switched off then the hatch won't operate the light. Mines got pressed on accident before and it took forever to figure out why the light wasn't working. Lol

I know there's some kind of sensor to know the hatch is open because my "hatch open light" on the dash comes on like it should.
Could I just have a bad light button? How do I remove that thing anyways, just pull? 99 btw.

Alright todays been a weird day for the jeep. Its the first day its been dry since ive owned it basically, and im getting non stop squeaks from what seems everywhere, but when i apply brake pressure the squeaks stop. And as a plus, now when i hit 55 i start getting strong vibes thru the steering wheel and alot of bouncing it seems. Before i could hit 85 and it would feel even smoother than my camaro did. Any help?
And whats the best way to get all the mud splattering out of the engine bay? Id like to just hose it down but im actually not sure if that will cause issues or not.

Ok so, I tried pressing the button, opening hatch, no light. Tried again, no light. Rear cargo light comes on when doors are open or light switch is turned on. Even with hatch closed, the button doesn't turn on the cargo light.

Looks like the cargo lamp switch controls whether or not the hatch switch can act as a grounding method for the lights (lack of relays in these things is seriously silly - has anyone else noticed that the dome lights are brighter when you have TWO doors open?).
A sign might be whether your dash light for the hatch being open comes on. If it doesn't I'd suspect the actual hatch switch first. If it does, maybe the cargo lamp switch is screwed. C314 etc is a connector near the cargo lamp itself, C310 & C311 I think are actually up near the hinge. FSM just says "top of liftgate"

Pop out the lens first with a screwdriver:

I'm betting on a smelted wire like below
When you pull the light out, grab one long corner and pull towards you and down, check the harness connected to it. On my 01, the switch leg was burned up so light only worked with light switch and Key fob. New harness spliced in and works like a charm. Couple of bulbs from superbrightled.com and in leave lights on while loading and unloading
I look at it tmrw. I was looking to upgrade to LEDs inside all around, that's what brought this whole idea around. Now I just want it to work like normal lol.
