No big surprise that you have a bum O2 sensor... 17 years is a long time. A clogged cat might cause your issue but it would be constantly present. Honestly this sounds like a sensor issue. I'd suggest checking your Throttle Position Sensor, should be done with an analog multimeter. It's got a 5V feed going into it, the idea is that the output from a shut throttle to wide open should be a smooth sweep from ~0VDC to ~4.5VDC. There are a few writeups on here with more detailed steps if you prefer. The TPS is used by the ECU/PCM for fuel mapping, setting idle RPM, and telling the transmission when to shift.
I'll get the o2 sensor changed anyways, but if the issue persists, I know where to look next.

Hey guys, i just bought this 5 speed jeep and cant seem to find the "P" gear? I had it on my auto and i've seen it on every other stick shift i've ever seen in my life but mine dont have it? 
My last 5 speed and the other one before that and that had it this one just has some black leathery rubbery thingy around the bottom of it i went to get out of the car and it rolled down a hill and then i almost hit some old lady i think mine has a factory defect what do you guys think???

so i have a 2000 grand cherokee bone stock everything in its great except the transfer case. the transmission engages in reverse and spins the spindle or what ever it is that attached into the transfer case. theres a good grinding noise that happens and it doesnt go backwards. so i need a transfer case. the problem i ran into though is what one? i have the 4.0 i6 with the stock automatic tranny i havent seen the transfer case options in any other i6 grand cherokees but my friend has a 4.4 v8 orwhat ever the smaller v8 is and he only has all wheel all the time neutral or 4 low. i have 2h 4 part time 4 full time neutral and 4 low so clearly we have different transfer cases. what model jeeps with what engines would have a compatible transfer case that keeps all my drive options? i dont want to switch to 4 all the time i feel like it'd wear my front differentials more than they need to be. is there a part of the vin code i should look for at parts yards or a special way to tell what transfercase would work with mine?
