Default Ran hot - really hot

My daughter had a 2000 jeep classic with the 4.0l inline 6, and a few weeks ago on her way home late at night it ran hot - she pushed it to make it to a store and it quit as she turned in.

So far I have replaced the raiditor - thermostat - and water pump, I did manage to get it to start but it has a rough idle and a lot of oil smoke blowback when you remove the dip stick or oil fill cap, it also ran hot in the yard sitting idle after a few minuets even with the new parts - My thoughts are it needs a head gasket or a head reworked, what are some ways to define the problem?

Thanks for any help

Ok well It didn't burn any gas hardly. Though I did just do all new seals on everything, new plugs n wires, oil change, fuel cleaner, seafoam, and used premium gas

It probably has the 0331 head so in all likelihood with those symptoms it has a cracked head

I'd replace the mechanical fan clutch for peace of mind. Maybe do the ZJ clutch upgrade. It shouldn't cause that much of a problem, but it wouldn't hurt to put in a new one.

That, too. Didn't have trouble with my '01, so I tend to forget about the 0331 issue.

Does the oil look milky brown like chocolate milk? You could do a compression test

Does it have water in the oil? Is there coolant in it (coolant, not just water), if there is, does white smoke come from the tail pipe? Does it stall and die?

Radiator cap new?

I would then say, head gasket.

Compression test would tell also. I heard you can get the tester at harbor freight.

Doesnt stall and die but does have white smoke coming from the tail pipe, the oil looks fine, so far - sounds rough (rough idle) and ran hot sitting in the yard with a new water pump and T-stat, if head is the answer where do you find the best price?
