this morning I went for a drive and I had no low gear..it was like stuck in second or third..it would not shift down. got it home ,tand let it sit for 3 hrs...then went for a drive .and it was fine..and all of a sudden..now it wont upshift out of 1st....I unpluged the tcu...and I can manualy shift it ok and all of the 1 thru 3 gears work.....any ideas?...I dont know ..what would be the most common problem.?..I did check the kickdown cable..it seems ok.
87-90 is the 4.0 with the RENIX (Renault/Bendix) fuel injection system. This is considered the "low output" motor.
In 91 they improved the head, cam and fuel injection set up. 91-06 is the 4.0 High Output with the Chrysler fuel injection system. Cherokees 91-96 and Wranglers 91-95 were badged as "4.0L, High Output".
The main difference between the two is the head flow characteristics. The ports in the head for the intake/exhaust are bigger and flow more freely, along with a change in camshafts and the deletion of some sensors, such as the knock sensor found on the RENIX 4.0s. Changes were good for about 20 hp more.
Personally i like Haynes manuals - but they're both pretty much the same.
If you plan on really getting into your jeep there is no substitute for a factory service manual though.

I would check out the Crankshaft Position Sensor, that thing is always giving us Renix XJ owners a headache...

Drawing on many years of experience, automatic transmissions will act up if they get low on fluid. This has got me a few times in the past.
quick question.
im looking into suspension, i dont want to do it in stages. my end game is about 4-4.5 inch long arm. the only ones ive really found is a tera flex and i cant really find any info on them. i have seen a rough country long arm upgrade. which i kind like over all it might save me some money, but i have to get a lift first.
whats about everyone recommend?

Yup, and I don't just mean the fill cap, I mean there's no way to fill the radiator. My 98' project rebuild has the radiator all hooked up, but there is no fill cap or fill neck. There's an upper and lower radiator hose that go to the water pump and engine block, and there's a small steel tubing that comes out of the radiator and goes under the engine, but there's no filler neck or pressure cap. How does one add water to the thing?
There's also no where for the overflow bottle line to be mated up to the radiator either. Whassup with that?

I have looked around and found transmission threads but they did not exactly address what I feel is my concern.
Here we go, as I accelerate and get to about 40 through 60 mph I hear this whining sound getting louder as I go faster. If I let my foot off the go petal the sound stops but if I press it again just to keep the speed up the whining sound returns. I have put it into neutral going 60 MPH and pressed the petal but no whining sound. Put it back into drive, press the petal and the whining sound returns.
Question: transmission? I just had a full flush using 12 quarts this past spring when I bought the Jeep. Or transfer case?
What do you think? The whining, the Jeeps not mine, seems to be getting louder or I am just tuned into it more.
Any ideas guys?

There is a reserve/overflow tank, and the hose should route across the front of the radiator support and plug into the fill cap overflow port. I've searched all the Jeep parts places and there IS a radiator like this but it says "for RHD only" so for some reason the postal Jeeps used these with no filler cap? I will probably replace it with a new radiator and return it to stock, somebody installed the wrong radiator at some point in time.
