LOL, that's weird the exact same thing (except in reverse my window won't go up) happened in my DD honda accord today. I think I am going to have to replace the whole window regulator system. Cheap on a honda but I hear it's kind of expensive on an XJ. I'm going to take mine apart tommorrow and make sure it's not just a loose connection or something first. I suggest you do the same.
I had the exact problem and also thought I was gonna have to replace the motors. The window is bolted to the motor in two places, one place is connected to the part that makes the window go up and the other place is connected to the part that goes down. Make sure that both bolts are there. The bolt that connected to the downward part had fallen out of mine so I couldnt roll it down but could roll it up. I put a replacement bolt in and it worked perfectly.
Its at the bottem of the window. there should be two areas where the motor connects to the window. If one is missing, there will be a small hole in the bottem of the window. It took me a while to be able to see it, thats if you are having the same issue
also check the window regulator itself and the plastic crap hasnt broken anywhere. the plastic tubing that pushes/pulls the window might have been broken, this happened to me.
Heh....only my driver window works on my 4 door... BUT if i hit the doors while pushing the switch, sometimes they work! "this is how we fix things on RUSSIAN space station!!"...turns out, it works on XJ's too.

Take a volt meter, and check for power. At the back side of switch, then window regulator, working back toward the dash. Odds are it's in that rubber sleeve, in between the door & body. This is a common spot for wires to ware, break, etc. (usually it the drivers door to go out first.) But while your door panel is apart, replace the plastic clips on the locking rod. they get brittle with age.(there cheap, and it beats doing it later)............................................ ........................JMO!
