You might want to also look at your trans mount, here is a quick fix, and what to look for,

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/b...ement-1046436/

If not that you may want to look at your rear brakes, they might be warn out and the star wheel that automatically adjusts your rear brakes when you go in reverse and hit the brakes might be at maximum allowed adjustment and every time you hit the brakes it tries spinning to adjust them and nothing adjusts.

Tighten up the track bar mount to the frame even though it appears tight.

I have a noise like this in my 85xj. When I back up and turn the wheels 2/3 to lock I hear a series of pops, it will then pop again if I turn the wheels 2/3 to the opposite lock while going forward. Turning it sharply going forward will not cause it to happen, only when backing up first. It normally happens when backing out of a parking space.

I removed the steering damper but that wasn't it, then changed out the track bar but that wasn't it either. It started not long after changing the unit bearings and u-joints up front. I don't think it is either of those. I was wondering if it could be the control arm bushings? Maybe the can holding the rubber bushing is moving in the control arm sliding back and forth as I move in either direction?

What cruiser said, also mine was popping. Turned out to be the axle end on the track bar. Even though it was tightened, the axle bracket holes were wallowed out so much that it would pop back in forth within the hole.
