Exclamation Whacky oil gauge

Greetings fellow jeep enthusiasts
i drive a 95 xj country with an inline 6 4.0L high output. everything is stock at the moment. anyways when i drive on the highway my oil gauge shoots up beyond the maximum 80. it almost goes up like the speedo and rpms. or sometimes it will just shoot up past max. i have no clue as to what could cause this. if any one has anyone ideas id love to hear them. thanks

Could be a bad sending unit. What are you running for oil/filter?

Abnormally high readings are usually the sending unit.

I highly recommend that you purchase this part from Jeep for the best reliability/accuracy/mating with your factory gauge. Worth the extra money for a dealer part here.

You can get this part anywhere, but for best reliability, buy it from a Jeep dealership.

Ya prob sending unit. And ya personally wouldn't run 10-40. I run 5-30 and will prob go down to 5-20. A lot of people put thicker oil then needed.

i asked my dad and he said he put 5w-30 in. it was either 1040 or 530 and i went with the closest being 1040 at least in my mind. so it could be 5w-30. whats the benefit of going down to 5w-20?

Check out bobistheoilguy.com the benefit is less wear and tear on start up. Pretty much all oil is the same thickness at operating temp. Lighter oils actually lubricate better when cold. I use synthetic as well because it is more stable and lasts longer. Also less friction.
