Ok so a while back (a few weeks) I posted about getting a 1995 XJ, 2 door, 4x4, 4.0 for a bit of labor/sweat equity. It had some wiring issues but I finally got them taken care of today and she’s up and running. Runs great! First time its been started in 3 years and she woke up like she’s been waiting to get going this whole time. Still needs a new battery and a few bits and pieces here and there. Got to talk to the owner today and she said that its been all over the west coast and has never given them a bit of trouble. Anyway, after I got it running I noticed a few things that need to be addressed. They are below. Things look a bit dry rotted so vacuum lines and connections are a bit unsat.
So here we go:
Can someone please tell me what this does?
I think its a vacuum line and it connects to a plastic vacuum line that goes towards the firewall. I think it goes to the evap canister but I’m not sure. I put my finger over the nipple thats broken off and it set a good amount of vacuum and lowered the idle of the vehicle as long as I held my finger on it. Can I repair this with a junk yard piece or do I need to replace the whole thing?
You can see that there is also another hose that needs to be replaced coming from the air box.
As for the vacuum line, I believe that it connects here. It’s the only other broken line on that side of the motor.
Also, on the other side of the engine bay is this vacuum line. It actually goes through the firewall, into the cab. Im guessing some kind of heater or a/c vacuum but I really have no idea.
You cant really tell in the pictures but there were an insane number of spiderwebs in the engine bay. Nearly started a fire around the exhaust manifold from all fo the webs that were wrapped around it. White smoke was pouring out of the engine bay until I turned off the engine. I let it cool down and started it again after about 15 min. No more smoking and I’ll bet the spiders got a bit rattled. We also moved it about 20ft just to help deter rabbit squatters.
Unfortunately, I still have rabbit turds on the intake manifold. After I get all the vacuum lines taken care of and a few fuel lines, Im gonna give it a compressed air bath and then I’ll take it to the local car wash and work on the engine bay. They do run better if you wash them right?
Lastly, any idea where I can get a factory service manual? I have a Hayne’s and a Chilton’s (came with the Jeep) but I’d like to see if I can get what the actual service centers would have had.
The grey line in the third picture goes to the heater flow control valve which you really don't need. Later models use a full flow heater core where coolant is flowing thru the core all the time. The other black one I believe is the canister purge solenoid service line. Neither one needs to be plastic. Rubber vacuum hose or fuel line hose works just as well.
The line that goes into the cabin thru the firewall connects to the function control that sends heated or cooled air to the various outlets.
WARNING! If you should ever decide to take that function control valve apart, be very careful not to lose the tiny steel ball. It's on a spring and smaller than a BB, it helps give the **** a "click stop" feel at each position. Getting it back together, provided you haven't lost the ball, is easier if you stick the ball on the spring with a little Vasoline to hold it in place.

so, tell us Dave, how you know about this ball.......
The one I had the problem with was my 97 ZJ. It was so stiff it wouldn't turn at all. Vasoline made it work pretty slick! Whatever pun you're thinking about, just forget it!
