Default Upper Radiator Hose Collapsing

Hello all,

Let me know if I'm in the wrong section for this. I popped the hood and noticed that my Upper Radiator Hose is collapsed, after running and when running. I'm driving a stock 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport, Automatic. It's weird because from diagrams I've seen it looks like the Water Pump should be pushing through the hose instead of something pulling from the water pump. Some extra info, after I pulled over and turned off the Jeep I had coolant spraying out of the Radiator Cap. Any thoughts of troubleshooting this would be awesome.

Thanks!

Welcome, GC!

You are correct - that should be the pressure side, so this is very weird. I"m thinking there's some kind of restriction (old leak-stop?) preventing water from entering that hose, thus there would be suction there, too. That would explain the overheating, too.

I'd say start with pulling that hose off and taking a look-see.

Do you think that the spraying of coolant could cause a vacuum to form since the pump wouldn't be on? I plan on taking a few things off cleaning them up and then putting cleaned or new hoses back on. Also thanks for the advice!

Make sure the hose to the overflow tank isn't pinched or obstructed. The radiator cap could be bad as well, as it should let coolant get sucked back into the system from the overflow tank when it cools down. If it doesn't then you get a vacuum which explains the collapsed hoses.

In theory, yes, but I don't know how that could happen in this case. I know some folks who swap engines sometimes run into that when they drop in an engine which has a water pump that goes opposite the stock engine.

I just can't see how it would happen here, and besides, that condition would ALWAYS exist until the problem was corrected. It wouldn't be a new thing that just came up.

So after doing some looking, I have a few cracked hoses, and when looking more closely into the Radiator Cap there's a bunch of what looks like rust. So I think I'm going to washout everything and see if anything fun comes out. I'm also going to be getting new heater hoses and Radiator Hoses. Also side note I'll be replacing the serpentine belt because I noticed that there's a groove forming in the kinda middle, might clean off the pulleys to make sure it's not causing the groove.
