i have 130k on my transmission, i want to do a fluid change and filter change. i dont think it has ever been done. are there guidelines i should follow to prevent damage to my transmission? also my manual says to use dextron II but everyone on here says dextron III. ANY advice is greatly appreciated.

I've been draining and filling every two weeks since early July when I bought the XJ (about 2 qts) to get it clean and no ill effects, finally clear red- It was nasty. Previous owners did nothing about maintenance...
dex/mercon III from Advanced auto part store.

I would not use ATF+4, no matter what the technical service bulletin from Chrysler says. That bulletin was issued more for a logistics reason for Jeep parts department, rather than what is best for the Jeep AW4 transmission.
SOME (not all) that use the ATF+4 fluid experience "slippage" with the transmission. Why would you want to take that chance when Dex/Merc will get you a very long service life from your AW4 transmission.
Because of the above, I stick with my recommendation of using Dex/Merc III compatible fluid. Dex II is not available any longer; superseded by Dex/Merc III. True Dex/Merc III is no longer available as licensing expired. However, Dex/Merc III COMPATIBLE fluid is widely available at any parts store.
The manufacturer of the AW4 transmission, (Asin Warner) recommends Dex/Merc and have never changed this recommendation. They know better than Jeep/Chrysler what is best for THEIR transmission.
Use Dex/Merc III compatible.
