Default Transfer case questions..

So in four wheel when my jeep is under any load it will slip out of gear, make a loud bang depending on how much traction the wheels get. It's like ..bang....bang......bangbang.....

Anyways The other day when I was backing out of a hole at work (not muddig , just some snow and a little ditch) my dad said that my rear wheels stopped momentarily with the bang.

The front seal on er is toast, have it waiting to install, soo fluid isn't completely full. Does this sound like it would be from lack of fluid? Or does it seem more like a stretched chain or worn gears?

I'm not a certified mechanic so I'm not sure, any insight would be great, thanks!

i've ran a t-case on low fluid for some time and it will still work... you can just hear the gears inside the t-case really humming along warming up.... which is abviously not good for it.

as far as your bang bang goes... yes it could be a stretched chain or could also be your t-case shift linkage.... i would check it to make sure it's still shifting through all the gear selections and is properly shifting into each gear selection before tearing the t-case out... Just a simple enough check that could be worth the 10 mins of time to look into.

Well wen I first got it, the linkage was out so far that if I let the clutch out in 4lo it would just skip and bang. Now that I've adjusted it only does it under load.

I guess the only way to properly adjust is to unhook it , throw it in 4 lo by hand then put the lever in 4lo then tighten it ? I put it in 2w then pushed the rod back.

And it does have the whine when cruising in 4 hi due to low fluid

i recently had this problem. It turned out to be an extremely loose chain.

Thanks for the link , they cannot be swapped from whAt I've read.

I adjusted the linkage with help this time. Got my dad to sit an switch through 2w to 4lo while I loosened and tightened that nut. Went in to the same ditch at work this time used 4 high came out with out skipping or banging. I gotta test it in some mud now see if it will hold up.

Well it's still isn't 100% , even with out the linkage and manually putting it in 4 wheel, still skips.

On a better note i just scored a parts jeep 4.0 5 speed , that has properly functioning and reliable 4 wheel. Gotta insure the car dolly and bring er home.

Can't wait!!!
