Default Trans or torque converter?

Hey guys I have had my 2000 Cherokee for a little bit now and have noticed a bump when stopping and hesitation when accelerating. It doesn't feel engine related, more like a the torque converter is having a time of engaging or disengaging, or maybe gear bands are slipping. It has 185,000 miles on it. I refuse to replace the trans fluid, "leave well enough alone" IMO. Can anyone tell me if at that mileage I should think about the trans or torque converter being replaced?

Change the fluid using the plug in the pan. Replace with Dex/Merc fluid. No worries.

But, I'm willing to bet the splines at the rear of the transfer case to the driveshaft need cleaning and re-lubing.

Maybe never, but sooner if you don't change the fluid.

Thanks, it looks like I'll have to plan a weekend for cleaning and lubing.

Seems to be the general consensus with these Chrysler things

Not sure. It's a 2000 Auto 4x4.

Again, not sure what that is.

I'll search for what people use and just go ahead and swap out all the fluids and grease in the drive line. Sounds like I have a fun weekend coming up.

That trans isn't Chrysler's. That's precisely why it's so good!!

It's not amc's either though! Lol
The aw4 was more commonly found in Toyota's if I Remember correctly...
Also, on the back of our renix map sensors(maybe other years too) there's a big ol General motors stamp on there.
Maybe that why amc is commonly called all makes combined!

Maybe you heard about power flushing, or back flushing which can loosen too much crud and spell the end. With your Asian Warner 4 speed all you do is drain it and refill. The high detergent in the fluid does the work slowly, you just change it more often, (say with oil changes) until it looks nice and pink.

Is this easy to do? I have a similar problem and think it might be related. Do I need to pull anything apart, or is is simply stuffing some grease up there?

Pull the rear shaft and grease the splines

If me accidentally driving my 91 (aw4) without any fluid for 30 mins didn't kill it, then changing the fluid out won't. Just make sure to fill it each time. Lol

I'd suggest dropping the pan, give it a good cleaning because that's where a lot of crud hangs out. Then you can get the magnets nice and clean too. Even of it is just a wire screen, I still replaced the filter as well.
