Mine is leaking and in going to put a new one on. Do I need to use any type of sealant on the gasket? If so what kind ?

I prefer to use a very thin film of RTV sealer on both sides of the gasket. The RTV will help seal small imperfections in the 2 sealing surfaces. There are several types of RTV sealer for various jobs.....read the RTV label to see what it's suitable to seal. Remember.....in order to insure a good seal, both surfaces must be sterile clean and don't over-tighten the bolts.....just snug is good.

Go ahead and get a new thermostat while you're in there.

Clean and dry. I wouldn't waste your time with the gasket that it will come with. I use RTV and thin layer on each the housing and the head. I also let the RTV set for about 15 mins before I put on. Don't be shocked if it leaks after your first attempt haha. I also let mine sit for a few hours before cranking.

Dude it's a thermostat housing going onto an engine block.

You're not doing a heart transplant. You don't need your gloves and face mask on to sterilize the freakin thing.

Just use a gasket scraper or puddy knife to clean off the old gasket and RTV. Then use some brake kleen, carb cleaner, rubbing alcohol, or any other cleaner and spray it on it. Then use a Brillo pad to clean it up more. That should be more than good.

I normally torque those bolts to 35 foot pounds but you don't need to. Just snug it up and you're good.
