I bought my 2000 cherokee classic around 3 months ago, and it has recently started making this AWWWWWWWWWFUL noise under the hood, mainly when i first crank it up or have the heat on. Im not sure if its the wore out serpentine belt, or water pump going out. The jeep has 220k. Any help is appreciated.
BTW. the numbers on the radio will frequently fade in and out along with the two front speakers. THANKS. BUTCH.

my 93 was squeeling with heat on...it dimmer headlights and slowed the blower motor. i found that the pulley right next to the a/c had burnt rubber on it, it started locking up. 30 bucks i replaced it and no problems

I'm not good with mechanics
, but mine was doing the same thing for some time, and I hated it.
It would only happen for a while when I turned it on, and it got worse when I would accelerate. I also found out that it only happened when the AC was on...so turning it off for a while helped this problem.
In my case, the belt was causing this horrible sound.

its you alternator. Its probably stock from 00'. after the alternators have a bunch of water and dirt in them. this creates shorts in the alternator. the squealing is because the alternator pulley is offering resistance due to the short, and the serpentine belt is continuing to spin. when it slides faster than the pulley it squeals. you just need a new alternator.
The reason your lights dim is because your alternator isnt rotating adequately and thus not charging sufficently
