Default Replacing motor questions?

Im looking at at buying a 1988 xj it currently has the amc 150 and is carbureted. The motor is shot and im looking at replacing it with a 92 wrangler amc 150. This motor is fuel injected. Will I be able to swap the carb from the xj motor and ditch the fuel injection? The motor should bolt right to the xjs tranny correct? Thanks for the help!

The only differnce I see is that the YJ motor won't have a place to mount the fuel pump on the block. You'll have to go electric.

A carbureted 88? Was a carb swapped onto it? My 87 2.5 is fuel injected. Its TBI, but still injected.
It should swap fine afaik, put your existing intake manifold on the new engine. If yours actually is carbureted, you may need to buy an electric pump, but it should have had fuel injection originally, so should be an easy swap.

Good catch. Perhaps the OP is confusing a throttle body with a carb?

Sorry it's an 86. Here is what it looks like he wants 500 bucks for it it looks pretty clean if all else fails I could part it out.

Sure it's an 86? 86 should have been throttle body injected, not carbed. What's the 10th digit of the VIN?

He says its an 86 I don't have the vin I will call and ask him for it. I think it's worth 500 bucks *** long as the swap should be pretty painless.

I agree. E is 84, F is 85, G is 86.

X2, only the 84-85 was carbureted, 86-90 was Renix TBI, 91+ was MPI, for the 2.5 4 cylinder.

It's a manual he says its fine. I have heard that the manual trannies on the old amc150 are turds. I won't be lifting it or putting bigger tires on.

Nah. The manuals behind the early 4.0s were turds.

I've got the AX5 manual in my XJ, 245,000 miles, and I wheel it hard every weekend, no issues at all with my transmission. They're fine behind the little 2.5
