Replacing head freeze plug back of motor. 99 xj 4.0
I'd say the thermostat died when the plug blew out. Just a guess, but they don't cost more than a couple of dollars. A thermostat's reason for existence is to keep the engine temp at least above it's set point. With your jeep, it should be 195* for proper mixture settings. Otherwise, the system is running in open-loop mode and the computer can't give mixture settings for max performance and fuel economy.

As you look at the engine from the front, the first head bolt on the right (driver's) side, only gets torqued to 100 ft/lbs. It's the only one that's threaded into the water jacket and the threaded hole is not as strong as the rest. That bolt should also have sealant on the threads or it will leak coolant. Head bolts are only supposed to be used twice, but good practice is to replace them every time. The Factory Service Manual says to paint them white if they are used the second time. Some newer manufacturers use torque-to-yield headbolts, in which you torque them to spec, then go 45* farther! That actually stretches the bolts and they should NEVER be used again.

I would torque them to spec as well or risk vacuum or exhaust leaks. I found it a PITA to torque manifold bolts in sequence because most times you have to torque the bottom ones from underneath the truck and the top ones from the top, of course. I'm 73 and getting down and up so many times was very hard on my body! After that nonsense, I took a break and had a beer. I hope you're using a new gasket on the manifolds?

I would also recommend new o-rings on the injectors while you're at this, especially on the fuel rail ends.
