Otherwise, the system is running in open-loop mode and the computer can't give mixture settings for max performance and fuel economy.
i just replaced the thermostat a few weeks ago but that would make sense. Thanks ill try that today

As you look at the engine from the front, the first head bolt on the right (driver's) side, only gets torqued to 100 ft/lbs. It's the only one that's threaded into the water jacket and the threaded hole is not as strong as the rest. That bolt should also have sealant on the threads or it will leak coolant. Head bolts are only supposed to be used twice, but good practice is to replace them every time. The Factory Service Manual says to paint them white if they are used the second time. Some newer manufacturers use torque-to-yield headbolts, in which you torque them to spec, then go 45* farther! That actually stretches the bolts and they should NEVER be used again.

thanks man, ill replace that all today. First time ive gone into the motor, gotta learn somewhere right? 😆 the bolts didnt seem warped but idk if they were changed before because the headgasket was in such good condition.. So for safe measure ill swap those too. Does the manifold need to be to spec as well?

I would torque them to spec as well or risk vacuum or exhaust leaks. I found it a PITA to torque manifold bolts in sequence because most times you have to torque the bottom ones from underneath the truck and the top ones from the top, of course. I'm 73 and getting down and up so many times was very hard on my body! After that nonsense, I took a break and had a beer. I hope you're using a new gasket on the manifolds?

oh the beer is a requirement lol that would make sense i checked the pressure at the exhaust pipe and it did go down a bit so ill get that taken care of

I would also recommend new o-rings on the injectors while you're at this, especially on the fuel rail ends.
