Default Switched to 5W30 PYB and never going back

I know that this issue has been beaten to death and I was a skeptic that merely changing to Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 5W-30 would help any engine noise.

I originally had Delo 10w30 Syn Blend Diesel and a fresh Wix filter (51348, my oil filter adapter elbow has been deleted) in the vehicle when I picked her up and over the summer I noticed that the engine was a lot louder on warm-up than usual. Sounded like either lifter tick or piston slap based on searching youtube and this forum. I am pretty certain is lifter tick at this point, but after this oil change, I am amazed.

Tick goes away now in about 90 secs when it used to take minutes / a few miles to subside. It seems to be getting quieter with about 350 miles on this current oil change. The engine also seems to be running a lot smoother when up at operating temperature as well.

PYB has my vote!

How do you have room for the filter to go on with the adapter deleted? When I had mine off, I stuck the filter up there to see if it would fit and it was hitting the body.

I went through a round of several oils when I got my XJ a few years ago to determine which one I thought sounded best. The local auto store had some aggressive sales at the time, so I tried several (Castrol GTX, Store brand, Rotella T6, Valvoline Synthetic), giving each a few hundred miles. My factory motor only had 49k miles on it at the time and ran flawlessly. Ultimately, I settled on Penzoil as well. 10w30 during warm months, 5w30 during the coldest part of winter. There is almost always a sale going on for it, so that has worked at nicely as well.

Other than what I've just typed, I don't get into oil choice discussions much. I'm just sharing because I noticed the same thing you are stating.

There are filters with smaller dimensions out there length wise. I forget what they are right off but a google search should dig up some info.

The filter I use fits just fine. There is a whole dedicated forum page to the deletion of the adapter. The Wix 51348 definitely fits! I can post a pic tomorrow.

Fits great until motor mounts or trans mount wear, heavy wheeling twists things.

And then, there's a hole in it.

Here is the complete write-up. They even talk about clearance and wheeling. Mine is used for camping and a daily.

I've been looking at PYB. I am currently using Rotella T5 with P1 filter. I got piston slap at startup but goes away after 4 mins, don't worry about that much, but I like a smooth startup.
I've done so many oil changes before, during, and after my engine issues/ sludge. So far, the engine is less noisy with 3 of the 6 oils I've used.
AutoQuest 5w30 frorm Meijer ( with a quart of MMO ) - MC FL-1A ( good combo here )
Shell Rotella T5 10w-30 - P1
Believe it or no.... Kohler 10w-30 Universal Engine oil with a AC/Delco Professional filter, during a 200 mile cleanse ( post-flush ). Stuff was vile, but the engine LOVED IT! Dad has 3 boxes of it laying around for projects/ tools.

I will give PYB a try next, EVERYONE says it quiets the I6 down. Its been on my list and I've been doing crap loads of research on the reactions.

+1 my XJ runs great and the most quiet on PYB. Sounds great on 10w30.

I thought I read somewhere that PYB had a high paraffin content or something like that, and while it did quiet some motors, it tended to leave behind a thick waxy residue in the motor.
Your results though are interesting. Both my 4.0's seems to run best with Delo semi syn 10w30 or Rotella T5 10w30, with NAPA Gold filters (1085 on one, 1515 on the other).
I may have to give your yellow bottle a try and see what happens.

Looked into this and the paraffin content is a myth from years ago.
Also, NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix, so they are a solid choice. Interesting that your 4.0 likes Delo
