it's too close to the firewall, you'd have one heck of a time just getting it out.
And it would be nearly impossible to get it back in...

If you don't have time, take it to a mechanic...

But I suggest you make time...

You have to take it off and i would make sure to put a brass one back in. Its just a couple more dollars and wont corrode.

You could try an expandable rubber plug. But it has to be even and flush with the head or it will pop out.

There just isn't much room to work with back there.

You have two options:

1. Pull the head.
2. Pull the dash and drill a hole in the firewall.

you may be able to buy some time, by half draining coolant, clean up leaking freeze plug as best as can, mix up 2 part epoxy metal filler, I think they call it JB Weld in USA, and jam it in there

this may temporarily slow, or even stop the leak, until you can find time to pull the head

obviously this is only a desperate measure, carry water in yr truck, monitor temp gauge etc etc

You COULD disconnect the exhaust pipe, transmission and t/case linkage, pull the crossmember bolts, and lower the trans down as far as you can. THEN you MIGHT be able to have enough room to replace it with an expanding plug after cleaning the pocket. You may need to disconnect the upper radiator hose so you don't crack the inlet connection on the radiator.

Lol I vote for the JB weld two part epoxy. I use it all the time. (easy for me to say, just had a shop do a valve job and they tanked the head, milled it, and new freeze plugs.)

I did mine when I had the transmission out, it was easily accessible then.

Probably easier to just pull the head..

I did one on back of block, had to drop tranny down and away. Probably less wrenching to take the head off for those though.

Ahhh I see now, 2009 zombie thread.
