Yeah you just yank it off.
Put it in first to do it.
And as EZEARL said watch out cause you can punch yourself in the face. LOL.
The one pitfall to watch out for.
There is a little white plastic crown type looking thing inside the handle.
Thought I had a shot from when I did mine but did not.
Stole this off the internet.

So you could possible bust one of the tabs off that.
20 year old brittle plastic and all.
I figure if you did you could not get the handle back on securely.
In anticipation of possible doing that when I had to remove my console I stole a spare from the boneyard.
Managed to get the one off the boneyard Jeep off with out snapping it.
Also managed to get mine off without snapping it either too so.........
Oh and you just press it back on when you are putting everything back together.

Oh one more thing.
When you remove the shifter you will see this white plastic "sex toy" (LOL) looking thing.
No need to remove it but there is a slight chance that could snap too.
Again back to the 20 year old brittle plastic and all.

True this! Looks like a sex toy. Mine broke tried the plastic coat hanger replacement but just wasn't flexible enough but manage to find one on ebay.

I just came across this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/JEEP-CHEROK...Condition=3000

Pricing kinda sucks and the fact that it is an auction doesn't help.
IMO this is a $5, maybe $10, at the boneyard.
But if something breaks......
Also figure it would give you an idea of the "sex toy" part. LOL.
