I have an automatic '01 XJ. I want to remove the T-shaped gear ****. I practiced on one in the junk yard and couldn't get it off, I likely broke something in the process. How do you get that thing off? I was only able to figure out how to remove the button.
not sure, but think you have to pop of the plastic selector cover and unbolt the whole shifter from the top of the tranny. I don't think the shifter is threaded or screwed on.....not 100% though

I think I'll try my own method an just pull hard......

I probably hosed the one in the junk yard. I twisted it around several times. I was really just trying to get the plastic gear indicator piece from the junker since mine has big scratch.
Once you get it off, will it go back on and hold as firmly as it did before?

Yep, just pulls off - you can't twist because of a channel on the inside of the handle.
Goes back on. In fact I took a ZJ handle and it fits albeit a bit tighter. Fits my big paw better.

Hit myself square in the jaw, knocked me back, dinged the top of my scalp on the corner of my overhead console, broke it off the brackets then when I landed in my back seat I bent the middle portion of the bench back.
Yeah, it sucked.

put shifter in d1/2 and remove from the back seat, it comes off easy if you lock up your arms and shoulders and just lean backwards and pull back with your upper body. Trying to remove it from the front seats is really out of position for leverage.
