That is a pretty reasonable price for a turn-key engine replacement. Expensive lesson, but will get her back on the road.

She had to get a different engine. Really no other good options.

Actually, depending on the car, changing taillights is not as easy as you think. That is why 90% of the population can't do it, and why mechanics can charge $150 for 5 mins. of work. You do that math!

Is there an engine swap write-up somewhere, or is that just something people are born knowing how to do?

It's so easy a cave man could do it, lol. Even if you don't know what half the stuff is/does, just pull it off label it good and put it back how you got it. It's just turning a wrench man.
