Pretty sure its done for.
My buddies GF has a 01 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0, Well last night she was driving and herd a loud pop. She pulled over and called my buddy. He went and looked and didn't see anything wrong so he fired it up and started to drive it home for her while she followed in his truck. Got about half way home when it just shut off on him at a stop light. He calls our other friend that is the mechanic for our group to take a look at it. Yep over flow tank and inside the radiator are giant frozen popsicle. They go to see if it will fire again, nope just sits there and turns. Didn't seem like there was any compression in the cylinders. Got under it and herd a lot of noise coming from the oil pan. Then saw the quart or so of oil on the ground coming from the back side of the motor. Do you think its done for?

i dont know much about GCs even though some have the same engine as the XJ...idk. Maybe a cracked head? Or maybe a seal? Gasket? sorry im a noob.
Pull the oil pan and take a look. Should be able to see what the issue is. Those motors are tough and easy to rebuild so I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet.

Here a real freeze needs to be heck of cold for a few days to bust a block. Smaller stuff like pipes and valves, sure, but the block needs days of sub freezing temps to crack. (My California opinion!).
I might give the 4.0 the benefit of the doubt. Check spark and fuel pressure. Have the codes read. Run 50/50 antifreeze. For the "moment" just get as much 100% in there as you can. Oil is foamy/tan? (or not). The CPS can cause "random" stalling.

Gonna take a thaw out and a thorough inspection and some testing.
But I would tell your buddy to put a little of her Christmas money away in case you need a new/different engine. Which is extremely likely.
Doesn't mean the rig is shot. Remember, the engine is simply a COMPONENT. A large one, but a component. And engine swaps aren't particularly difficult. I cannot even remember how many of them I've done during my years of wrenching.....

No such thing, I think you meant core plug its purpose is to release sand not water i.e:

however correct the term "core plug" may be, just try ordering that at advance or autozone, you'll get the "deer in the headlights" look.
Most parts catalogs list them as freeze out plugs, anyway, back on topic.
Whether or not the engine is damaged beyond repair, as stated earlier, it doesn't mean that the jeep is "done" .
Worse case....you get a donor engine.
