My understanding on this is jeep made an XJ that was considered a full time 4x4 most of the XJ's were le a typical 4x4 where you can take it in and out of 4x4. So they labeled this part time. When you engage the 4x4 whether it be hi or lo it then will truly be full time until you disengage back to 2 wheel drive.

Part Time because it's not intended to be used Full Time, i.e. all conditions. Dry paved road will ruin some or all of your drive train. Now if you have an NP242 (like me) there is an additional position and corresponding Full Time light.

Not silly just not designed for scenarios that don't need it.

I agree about being silly. While Part Time might be accurate it sure isn't intuitive.

Really? Part of the time it's on. Not on full time. Seems pretty intuitive to me.

is this denoting that the part-time vehicles have more of a locker setup and the others do not? i noticed this same light on mine. obviously i know better than to drive on a surface in 4wd that does not need it, but i am saying "wtf dodge" a lot...to a lot vehicles haha.

In Part Time the xfer case locks the front and rear drive shafts together. When you turn on a hard surface it causes binding because the front and rear travel different paths. This puts a lot of stress on the various parts involved. On dirt or snow this doesn't matter because of the limited traction.

On the NP242 and other Full Time systems there is some type of differential in the xfer case so the front and rear can turn at different speeds and the binding on hard surfaces does not occur.

The bezel around the lever will have a fulltime and a parttime position.

Or, you can climb under and have a look at the badge on your transfer case. It's cold out. I'd just look for the Full-Time detent on your transfer case shift bezel

So, are you doing a photo documentary on creating an advanced CPS from a stock one?
