Angry Oil Filter problem

I have a 99 4.0 and cant get the oil filter off, I had this problem the last time i changed it. I dont know what the deal is I cant turn it really at all. Wondering if you guys have had that issue and wondering what suggestions you have.

I changed the fluid, but left old filter on ther cause I was getting so p.o'd, Never have had a filter i could get off with a wrench. when i get suggestions and can get it off ill just have to replace a qt.

What kind of filter wrench are you using? The filter location is pretty open and lends itself nicely to a filter strap wrench. Or just cut it off and replace once the oil is drained.

Im just using one of those slip on wrenches that tightens on the filter as you turn it.

When replacing make sure there is a film of oil on the gasket. When the gasket touches the base turn the filter one quarter of a turn more by hand.

I have had luck loosening stuck filters by punching a screwdriver all the way through and turning with that...

next time make sure to lube the rubber gasket with some fresh oil to keep it from sticking (at least not as bad)

Most auto parts stores have endcap wrenches that grab the grooves in the can.
My filter sits vertically and this is the only way I can break it loose or tighten.

I use a filter wrench that looks like a Channel Lock with curved jaws designed specifically for oil filters. I've never come across one that I couldn't get off. Are you sure you are turning it the right direction? The filter on a 4.0 is pretty easy to get to.

Excellent advice and often overlooked.

i have the exact same set up, use the end cap wrench. word to the wise, dont cut the filter off as suggested earlier, sounds like a recipe for metal shavings to get in the crank case. just my .02. pre lube. proper torque spec, and easiest removal tool for your rig and you'll be all set.

Yeah, I spent a half hour battling my first filter change - the PO musta got paranoid and socked it on crazy tight - or didn't use any oil on the gasket.

The filter is too far into the engine bay to get adequate hand pressure on the end of those - I use a mechanical clawlike thingy that duplicates the band approach. Trick is - don't overtighten it! Hand tightening won't be hard to remove with tools.

i will have to look for the end cap filter or the clawlike wrench.

Also Im sure im turning it correctly turning it left/counterclockwise unless the filter has right hand threads.

I thought i oiled the gasket I usually do but maybe i overlooked it the last time??
