As stated before, you guys run whatever filter you want. Like Dave brought up before, changing the oil and filter on time is the most important thing. This is a great example that any filter CAN end up like a Fram after 1000 miles haha. That one having a crushed media means it was plugged up and full. Mix that with the super black oil and you can tell it was long over due.
GreaseMonkey - Glad to see you actually took the time to diagnose it before deeming the engine junk. Shows you know what you are doing!
When I get home I think I shall head down to the local WalMart and get one to cut up cause the one he used doesn't seem right.

Well I don't want to be known that I am not a man of my word!
Mostly.
Usually.
Occasionally.
Maybe we'll just not go there.
Anyway, cut up the Fram from my Frontier 4.0, which has a PH7317. Next time you're at WalMart, take at look at it. It's TINY! But, the engineers must know what they're doing. BTW I use this truck for long trips, so I'll put on about 960 miles in 13 hours. At 5000 miles I've only got about 80 hours on the oil, and if you use the generally accepted value of 150 hours when you should change it, I figure I've got a huge buffer.

Anti-flow valve, metal core to prevent crushing, pressure valve aperture 17/32" (although the way the valve works there will be restriction). Two filter folds are bent. This is clearly a design, signifying that it was made in the House of Bolton.

Thanks, I try to “ keep it simple” rather than assuming . Unfortunately I will never know how many hours or miles this LOF on it . But it just goes to show how important oil changes are . A 20-30 dollar oil change about cost them a 3,000 dollar long block .
Structurally the filter element seemed pretty sound when it was intact. However, after a squash with The Gobblers (16.5" channel locks), and once I started ripping things apart there wasn't much integrity. Those accounts where people found filter material clogging stuff up could be true. Maybe this is like the Space Shuttle. Lose a few tiles and things start to fail fast.
Now that I got the bug, I have that Premium from Crown, a Mopar and a K&N to do.
Kinda wish I hadn't found this thread, luckily I am about due for my oil changes. I change every 6 months, since I'll most likely not go over 5000 miles in that amount of time.
Just curious, what are opinions of the K&N, or Royal Purple filters.
