Default oil in air box

OKay so changed the air filter the other day and the filter was actually dripping a little and there was some gunk built up on it, and there was oil dripping out of the air tube also...so does that mean to much blow by or what?

also i got a really bad flat spot and it doesnt like to start sometimes, died the other day and didnt want to start for about a minute and when it did it smelled alot like gas even though i never once touched the gas peddle..so yeah just tryin to get somethings figured out..

post some pics of the filter so I can see what it looks like.

From what it sounds like, I would say the tube may have been clogged and for some reason released alot of oil all at once. (just a long shot)

replace your pcv line and grommet. same thing happened to me. its the plastic hose that goes from the back of your valve cover to your intake. when it gets clogged it no longer acts like a vacuum and then oil vapors get into the hose on the front of your valve cover that connects to your air box and it makes everything messy inside the air box.

I have same problem. So replace entire line in back? What are you referring to as the grommet? The elbow/orifice going into valve cover? Thx in advance!

You either have a clogged CCV system (crankcase ventilation), or true engine "blowby" (bad rings)

OR a combination of the above.

87-90 especially are notorious for having a clogged CCV system, so you should absolutely start there.

I would replace ALL ccv hardware; it is only about $45 for the gommets and tubes coming and going from the valve cover. Can get this from NAPA, dealer, Team Cherokee, etc.

Best way is to remove the valve cover, thoroughly clean it, replace both grommets, new valve cover gasket, install new CCV tubes and you're good to go.

Here is a link to a good article on "oil in the air filter and causes".
