Default Noise trasfer case

I just purchased my first XJ and it has a noisy transfer case in 2wd in 4wd it is just plain loud. Needs some help.

Thanks everyone. 99 Sport 4.0 auto 231 case Dana 30 hp Chrysler rear. Found low on fluid so I will be changing it in morning.

Low fluid. The question is, where did the fluid go? The transfercase doesn't consume fluid like an engine may use some oil between changes. Look for a leak and fix it.

Probably a defective seal, if there is noise the damage is already done.
