Default No horn/crusie control. No airbag light

Hey everyone!

Been a while since I've had to ask something, I usually find my answers by searching, but this one has me stumped. The horn and cruise on my 99 XJ have not been working since before I purchased it, so at the time I just assumed it was the clock spring (I am still assuming that's the case). I have a new clock spring on the way, but my concern is that the airbag light is not, and has never been on since I got it.

Question is, do you think the prior owner may have pulled the airbag light? Or possibly pulled a fuse to get the light to go out before selling it? In either case, when I replace the clock spring, if a fuse has been pulled will it effect the normal operation of the airbag? Anyone know which fuse to check for it?

Thanks!
Scott

Does the airbag light come on during startup, and then go off? It should do this every time. If it doesnt even do that then the bulb may be blown or missing, or the fuse has been been pulled. I 'think' there are two fuses in the JB? #26 and #27 (10 amp fuses). Check them to be sure. As for the clocksprin, it is a spool of wire like an old IDE ribbon cable for a desktop PC, and works like a fishing reel. it winds and unwinds with every turn of the steering wheel. The clockspring contains wires for the airbag, cruise and horn. You can have a break in the horn, cruise, airbag wiring, or any combination of. Even all of them at the same time. When the circuit for one is broken, the others can still work.

When replacing a clockspring, keep the wheels pointed straight ahead. Disconnect the battery for 15-30 minutes to let any residual charge in the airbag control module bleed off before messing with the airbag (store the airbag face UP on a non conductive surface, and always carry it facing AWAY from you). The new clockspring will have a clip to keep it from unwinding. Dont remove the clip until AFTER the clockspring has been installed, and do not connect the battery until you are finished putting everything back together. Turn the key to RUN to make sure the airbag light comes on and then goes out, and then start the engine. The light should not come back on. If it is, you have a codes stored in the airbag control module. You will need a code reader that reads airbag codes.

If the turn signal stalk has been replaced and the wiring plug not attached properly, it will show the same exact symptoms.

Thanks for the help folks! I got the clock spring replaced over the weekend. Cruise control is function again, but you know... I completely forgot to test the horn lol. I'll have to try that out late today.

The airbag is another matter. When I turn they key to run (both before and after replacing the clock spring) I get no airbag light. I checked the fuses for the airbag, and both are good, nothing appears to be wrong there. Safe to assume it may just be a dead bulb behind the cluster?

Turn signal stalk appears to be original, not replaced, but are there any other symptoms? It functions normally, activating turn signals and high beams.

...another tip I heard from someone is, after everything is back in place and battery is reinstalled, start the vehicle for the first time from the passenger seat.

Also, this forum is for XJ era and beyond. The SJ (full size Cherokees) have their own forums. You'll get better responses going there.
