I have a 1999 xj and the airbag light stays on, but sometimes it goes off, I pulled both fuses and they both looked OK but once I pulled them and replaced them then the light stayed off for a few starts then it comes on and goes off for a second then comes on and stays on, could this be a fuse going out or something under the steering wheel?

Probably the clock spring. Does your horn and cruise control work? I had the airbag light and no cruise control in my Jeep up until a couple days ago. Swapping the clock spring fixed everything. Its a pretty simple swap.

Not always, but very often this is an indication that your "clockspring" is taking a dump. This is directly under the steering wheel, basically a spool of ribbon wire that handles the electronics on the wheel. Is your horn still working?

My horn works and the Jeep doesn't have cruise control as an option

My horn still worked as well, but the clock spring was still causing my cruise control and airbag issues.

Ya the horn doesn't always poop out, but regardless, the CS is likely the issue. Could also be the sensors, or a problem in the main harness... But 9 outta 10 it's the clockspring.

How difficult is it to replace the clockspring? Will the light keep me from passing safety ispections? I'm due this month

Something else to note is that it has an aftermarket stereo installed by the previous owner and the front door speakers don't always work, could this in anyway be related?
