My husband's 96 jeep Cherokee wouldn't start after work. It wasn't running hot or anything. Naturally we thought it was the battery. All the lights are on in the car so we know the battery is good and terminals are clean. So he replaced the starter. Still won't crank. You can hear a small click but that's it. Then he replaced the ignition switch. Still nothing. What are we missing? We're not opposed to taking it in but he would like to know what's wrong with it first.
Thanks!

It's most likely the neutral safety switch, they get grungy inside and stop working. Use the search function for instructions on how to clean it.

That's it! Was able to wiggle it in neutral while cranking and it started. My husband will take it off and clean it when he gets home! Thanks for the help!

be very careful, they are brittle and very expensive.

follow up
Ok. We got it out and cleaned it. It's reinstalled and he said the gears feel pretty loose when shifting. He hasn't driven it yet because he had to run an errand and wanted to make sure that was normal?
