Default Neglected Nellie tranny troubles

Well, . . . I was ready to pick up the jeep from the shop with the rebuilt $4800 auto transmission, after it lost first gear, but now it doesn't shift into 4WD smoothly like it used to do. The shop says that the problem is in the transfer case which they didn't touch, they're two separate components, and the linkage being old / loose is contributing to the problem. They put it on the lift, disconnected the linkage, and it was grinding into gear. Not terrible, but not smooth as it was before they installed the rebuilt tranny. Before I give them the balance on the transmission, I'd like to know if the 4WD shifting problem is related to the tranny and their problem to fix (since it worked smoothly before) or unrelated and therefore my problem?

Thanks

Install one of the aftermarket linkages. That will solve any linkage issues. You might also check what fluid they put in the xfer case, assuming they lost some fluid pulling it.

$4800 to rebuild a trans seems pretty steep. A professionally remanufactured AW4 goes for $2000-2500 and is about a 4 hour job to swap out.

I know very little about auto trans so I'm kind of stuck. the price was the same at several places in Pueblo.

I helped a friend pull and replace one last year. Is that all there is to it, pulling and installing ( swapping parts) ? I thought there was a bunch of electonic computer wiz bang blue smoke and mirrors to go with it.

The trans is done so the only issue remaining is whether the transfer case / linkage / ???? is impacted by whatever they did ( or didn't do ?) on the tranny. They want me to pay off the tranny balance and accept that the transfer case is separate and therefore my responsibility. If that is accurate then it's not their responsibility for whatever condition existed with the transfer case before they started on the tranny. My problem is that I don't know enough about it one way or the other to make an informed decision.

All I know is that 4WD engaged smoothly before the tranny troubles.

Thanks
